Hi Betty,
I'm still researching connections to the various PA Carson lines for my David Carson born 1755-65 PA died c1828 Haywood NC. I keep stumbling across Carsons from the Samuel of Chester PA (died 1766) line and from New Castle DE although I still think my David more likely connects to a Lancaster group of brothers/cousins. I just don't know yet if that group connects to the York or Chester group or neither. Here are some questions (sorry for the length):
- Has a Carson male relative of yours done the YDNA test and, if so, are the results posted?
- George W. Carson born 1797 is listed as a son of Walter Carson and Agnes. G.W. was in Macon NC 1840 two houses away from William Carson born 1801 (from my line) who married Lydia Crawford in Haywood NC. Do you think this just a coincidence? William moved back to Haywood NC before 1850.
- Hannah Carson born c1740 New Castle DE married James Rankin. They were in Guilford NC later near my Carsons in the 1770s. She is listed as a dtr of Samuel of Chester. Is this accurate and, if so, did they marry in DE? Did any others move to Guilford, Orange or Caswell NC?
- A Carson that is an exact match for my YDNA descended from Thomas Carson b1740 who married Mary Smith in New Castle DE, then they moved to western PA later. Do you have a Thomas first name in your line? This is the same geographic area as your Samuel Carson of Chester.
- Do you know Jane Pattersons parents? Could she be the "Jayn" daughter of William Patterson who died 1745 in Lancaster PA? A Samuel Patterson married Martha Ramsey 1763 in Lancaster PA. The wedding was by Rev. John Roan who married some of my Carson line around the same time. Samuel's parents were Samuel Patterson (died in 1777 Sadsbury Lancaster) and Rebecca. Samuel's grandfather was William Patterson who died 1745, leaving children Samuel, Francis, Anna, Caytron, Jayn and Mary. My David Carson was executor for a Samuel Patterson who died 1815 in Haywood NC who may connect to this PA line.
Thanks for any info you can share.

I am trying to find Peter Carson. He was born in Glasgow in 1907 and married Ruby Halliburton in Dundee in 1944. After that date I have lost him. The family story is that he moved to England but I have no evidence to prove or disprove this. All I know is that I can't find any record of his death in the Scottish records, so must presume he did not return here.
Can anyone help?

Roy,
I did some looking through the census data and think that your are correct that Samuel CARSON b.1821, MS is the father of J. Robert CARSON.
Samuel CARSON and Mary are listed in the 1880 census of Red River Co, TX; but this is evidently his second wife.
Samuel is also listed in the 1860 census of McLennan Co, TX with wife Mary A. b.1832, TN. In this household is listed J.R. CARSON age 4 born MS.

I also wanted to mention that you can do the 12 marker
for $99 (group price) and then upgrade if you want to,
which you would if you had exact 12/12 matches, as
that would refine the relationship. Gary has a 25/25
match now and waiting on the last set of the 37. If
they match 37/37, both of them will probably consider
the 67 upgrade, which is as high as it gets. Now, I'm
NOT an expert at this, but a complete 67 match is only
going to be a couple generations away from the common
ancestor.
Anyway, I'm going to do the "layaway" plan and do the
12 first, then upgrade, and maybe upgrade again.
Yes, you can pay for someone else's test, all females
need to do that. I'm paying for my father's. It is
recommended to do the oldest generation that you can.
It must be a male Carson that got his surname from a
male Carson, all the way back as far as you know it.
If one male in the chain was adopted or took his
surname from his mother, then his Y-DNA is NOT Carson.

I paid $189 (plus tax because I'm in Texas) for the 37 marker YDNA test. The
12 marker basic test is about $99 but is less accurate. I did the 37 marker
which, if there's a match, indicates a much closer link.
The Carson DNA site has a link to the Family Tree DNA service that performs
the tests. Here's a link to the Carson DNA website. From there, you can click
on "Recruitment" to go to the test service to sign up for the YDNA test (or
other tests).

I just wanted to state that neither Gary or I gain any
money from this DNA research! Gary is just as he
states and I answered the call to be a co-coordinator
for the site, seeing as I was born a Carson. I have
been emailing those who have done their DNA and put
their pedigrees on line and worked with Terry Barton
to update the DNA results page. I've also started
working on adding some source material to those lines
that have already been tested.
Gain money from this, hmm, I hesitate to assign a
number to how much time and money I've put into my own
research, several thousand I am sure. Gained money?
Not one time! Gained answers, ancestors, cousins, and
friends? Plenty!

My ggrandfathere WILLLIAM CARSON, who married Sarah Carson in Boston in the
1800s, came from County Tyrone also in the 1800s. They raised their four
children, Harold, Roberta, Frank and Don. in the Boston area of Massachusetts.
According to a cousin, a sibling of either William or Sarah was Elizabeth
Reed. I believe Elizabeth Reed, who had a daughter also named Elizabeth Reed,
worked in a bank in Dorchester or Roxbury MA. It is an ongoing source of
regret that I have failed miserably the task of finding other Carson cousins in
Massachusetts or even in New England. Siblings of Sarah and William are
reported to be in Pennsylvania and Connecticut and are associated with the
surnames of CRAWFORD and PHELPS.
Sadly, I have no further information on ELIZABETH REED, except a census or
two.
Like so many family historian wannabees, I wasn't serious about genealogy
until key family members were dead or couldn't remember. If I could find a
cousin with WILLIAM CARSON I have some information, including marriage and
funeral certificate, work history with the City of Boston over thirty years,
his will, burial information, census records, a conjecture that he came from
Fintona , Couny Tyrone and photos. I know much less about his wife, Sarah,
except that either she, or her mother, Mary Erwin, might have been a school
teacher in Amagh before she came to the U.S. I'm happy to share what I do
have. Thanks, Sandy Holmes, _bkworm26(a)aol.com_ (mailto:bkworm26@aol.com)
