My Carsons also have a plethora of Williams, Sarahs, James, Joseph, John. To add insult to injury, my ggrandparents were some sort of cousins, Sarah Carson married William Carson in Boston, late 1800s. I have pictures of them. They came from county Tyrone.
William's siblings ended up in Pittsburgh PA so far as I can surmise; Sarahs in Ct.......though the latter information is questionable. My ggrandparents lived in Boston throughout their married life. I've always wondered why they didn't settle in the same place.
I'm dizzy from trying to find out who was related to whom.
Death certificates list Sarah's parents as Mary Irwin and Joseph Carson; William's parents are Rebecca Scott and John Carson. Siblings of each I've tentatively taken from emails from others. Fintona and Six Mile Cross maybe where one of them was born, probably William.
It is possible that Sarah was a teacher in County Armagh before she emigrated.
Sorry this is so mixed up. Sadly, the Carson part of my aging brain is likewise confused.
I'd be happy to send my tentative Carson family group chart to anyone who'd be interested, with or without picture of William and Sarah.

Sherry, Thanks again for MacGillivray Cemetery document. I came across another list for this cemetery at the Ottawa Valley GenSoc site with additional info. This site mentions the two eldest sisters of James (12.03.1826) Carson ... Elespy Carson (04.10.1849 - 11.06.1923) W/O Able W Cummings...and Mary Ann Carson (d.15.03.1878 in her 30th yr.) W/O Joseph Hardy... also listed is Mary Ann Small W/O William Carson (d.08.03.1873 in his 82nd yr) who was buried there in ?.03.1836 in her 33rd yr which predates any of the other burials (perhaps a typo?)...also a James R Carson (d.04.12.1889 in his 90th yr) H/O Mary Booth (d.31.03.1881 in her 72nd yr) ...Do you have any info connecting these people with James Carson & Margaret McKenzie ...also listed Donald Mckenzie (d.17.08.1845 in his 46th yr) H/O Isabella McKenzie (d.28.07.1871 in her 71st yr)

Yes, that is certainly a good possibility. The only problem is that many of those Carsons are named James, William, and John, so the challenge is to distinguish them. I've run into this problem in other lines but never to this extent. Hopefully one day we will get them all straightened out. Thanks for your input. I will add it to the pile!

Susan and Gary, I will throw in my 2¢ worth on the NC Carsons. My ancestor is William (Billy) Carson (1773-1845) who was high sheriff of Rutherford Co from 1798-1809 and 1821-1836. His father is supposedly John Daniel Carson (1730-1790) who was born in York, PA and moved to Camden District, Craven Co SC (now York Co) in 1779 and about 1790 came to Rutherford Co NC near Hollis. Have you looked in that area for your Carsons?
According to my research, a group of families migrated down from PA, including McFarlands, Prices, Gettys, and others.
Is anyone researching the Carson family in Pittsburgh, PA?
My family is Robert Carson whom married Elizabeth Welsh (Walsh) in 1889 in
Pittsburgh, PA.
I can't find anyone else researching this family.
Darlene

Hi Gary. I agree that the NC Carsons are related and that they probably came from PA. Also, based on how many Carsons there were even in the 1790 census, my guess is that they came over from Ireland very early. But since I can't get back further than James that is not important yet. Anyway, I have nothing to indicate that my James ever lived in TN. However, there are no census records for TN until 1810 and by then James was established in Buncombe Co. NC. William was born "in NC" in 1793 so James was living in the state by that time. In the 1790 census, there are 4 James Carsons in Burke, Rowan, Surry, and Orange Counties of NC. In 1800 there were three, one in Burke, one in Cabarrus, and one in Orange County.
In 1790 I find only 2 David Carsons in the recorded census, one in Albany NY and one in Chester PA. In 1800 David Carson was in Buncombe Co. NC. In 1810 there are 3 separate listings for Davids in Buncombe Co.... David M. Carson, Sr., David M. Carson, and David Carson, all listed on the same page of the census.
You are right. I have no Robert or Charles Carsons in my data. In 1800 there were 3 Robert Carsons in NC, in Iredell, Lincoln, and Orange Counties. In 1790 there were a Robert Sr. and a Robert Jr. in Iredell Co. NC. In 1810 there were 4 Roberts in NC, 2 in Iredell and 2 in Orange Co. plus a Robert Carson in TN (the only Carson in TN although by 1820 there were 14 Carson families in the state).
I was looking through the 1820 census and find that my William, James, and John are all within a few houses from each other. They are on p. 15 of Ancestry's census records for Buncombe County while Charles is on p. 24 and Robert on p. 22 so if they are all related, there was some physical distance between them.
There is one other name that appears for me, although I don't see it in census records. Joseph M. Carson filed a lawsuit against William Carson for payment of a debt in 1834. Do you have any knowledge of him?
Finally, since no one else is joining in on this discussion, could we do it by regular email? My address is sbabb2(a)aol.com. Please use that from now on. Susan

If I might join in, have you run into a Shadrack W. or Shadrick W. Carson in that general area, especially in North Carolina.. I have a Shadrack or Shadrick W. Carson who had a son Robert Burton Carson born in Haywood Co., North Carolina. in 1828. Shadrack or Shadrick was born about 1805 in Tennessee, (have no idea where in Tennessee), but at 18 he went to North Carolina to live with relatives and shortly after he married Mary Turner who was from Haywood Co. They lived in eastern Tennessee, but not Washington Co. I believe it was Jefferson Co. Tennessee and went on to Georgia, they seemed to go back and forth somewhat. Shadrack's Father was one of the many Robert's. He went back to Tennessee and married Mary P. Louallen who was born also in North Carolina.
I would appreciate any information and would be glad to share what little I have.
Thanks,
Rena

Susan,
We communicated awhile back about your James Carson and son William. My ancestor David Carson was born 1755-65 and is possible a brother or cousin of James.
David was in eastern TN (Washington County probably) 1780-1799 then in Buncombe NC 1800-1810 then Haywood 1820. There were tons of Carsons there, most seem related (5 Davids, several Roberts, Williams, James, Samuel, Andrew, Moses).
He had a son born 1785-1790. I found Robert Carson and Charles Carson in Buncombe in 1820, both of whom could be the right age (26-45). As I recall, you don't list them as sons of James. Do you know anything about this Robert and Charles and how they connect?
Also, did your James ever live in TN?
Thanks,
Gary

P.G. Carson is also my gr gr grandfather. I have not been able to verify that there is a relationhip to Kit Carson. He may have been a cousin to Kit through his father if we can ever identify him. I found Pleasant in Hamilton Co., Indiana before he married Sarah. Maybe his father is there. Haven't had time to go to the library and check the records there. Hopefully soon.

Sometimes you can find some valuable family history in the
allied (related by marriage) family genealogy books.
Found this neat store that sells old family history/genealogy books, might be worth a look to anyone doing genealogy. Sure has helped me!
Never know, you might just find your ancestors in them.
