Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hello list, I did some searching for those of you that requested it in the
High Point, NC library's "North Carolina Collection" today. Here is their
web site, though it looks like they may be doing some re-construction since
some pages aren't working (also watch the underline mark in nc_room):
http://www.hipopl.org/ncroom/nc_room.htm
They had plenty of records for NC, and some for TN and SC. There were
records of a more general nature for other states, though a fair amount for
PA that I'll have to check out again some time soon for myself! Following
are some emails to specific people that I hope give them information they
were looking for, and possibly give others some clues about their own
Carsons.
This was my first visit to a library to look up information, so I am still
learning how to make my time as efficient as possible. I may not go again
for a couple of weeks, but feel free to send any additional requests in the
meantime. I would like anyone who has a request to make sure when they give
me a Carson to look up, include a date and county to reference to, and
possibly an event to tie it to, such as land purchase/sale, marriage, death.
Births don't seem easy to track with the texts I have available, so you
should make your best guess where they were living at the beginning of the
following decade, and I will check the census (eg born 1807, I would want to
know where living 1810).
Those of you who have done this before, please send me any tips so I do a
better job next time!
Eric Young

Dot,
I thought that i had sent you this information. I have information indicating
that the parents of Elbert Hillard CARSON b.1854, MS are:
Samuel R. CARSON b.1824, MS and Evaline BLACKWELL b.1825, KY
Samuel's parents were:
George CARSON b.1770/1775; d.abt 1840, Pike Co, MS and Elizabeth b.1782, SC.
The key to finding this information was locating Elbert and his brother
Gilbert in the 1880 census.
Gilbert CARSON is listed in the 1880 census of Holmes County, MS in the hh of
John CARSON as a nephew. Also Sam CARSON listed as a cousin. I do not
believe that Gilbert is actually the nephew of John CARSON, but instead the
son of his cousin-Sam CARSON. I also found E.H. CARSON in the 1880 census of
Madison Co, MS in the hh of A.C. and Gabriella SHARP.
From this and some other census information and records, I have put
together a couple of possible family groupings. I still have several gaps in
my information and would appreciate any corrections or additions.
George CARSON b.1770/1775; d. abt 1840, Pike Co, MS m.(1) ______. They had:
John Wilson CARSON b.19 Sep 1796, SC; d.31 May 1878, Washington Parish,
LA;
m. Caroline Matilda FOIL b.7 Feb 1819, GA.
George m.(2) Elizabeth ________ b.1790, SC. They had:
Female CARSON b.1800/1810
Male CARSON b.1810/1815
Male CARSON b.1815/1820
Female CARSON b.1810/1815
Mary CARSON b.1817, MS m. William H. ARD
Samuel R. CARSON b.1824, MS
Julia Ann CARSON b.1826, MS m. John Azeral "Zeke" MCKENZIE
I'm speculating on the first marriage of George CARSON and the relationship
of John Wilson CARSON to George CARSON. From the census data, he appears to
have been in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 censuses of George CARSON and he and
Samuel are listed in the 1843 tax list of Pike Co, MS. It is possible that
he could be related in another way, but it is logical to assume that he is a
son of George CARSON.
Elizabeth as the wife of George CARSON is concluded from the presence of
Elizabeth CARSON in the hh of Azeral MCKINSEY in the 1850 census of Pike Co,
MS and the hh of William H. ARD in the 1860 census of Washington Parish, LA.
The 1820, 1830 and 1840 censuses also gives the appearance that there were
other children of George and Elizabeth CARSON.
It is very possible that John CARSON b. abt 1780, SC is a brother of George
CARSON. John and George are listed in the 1816 Territorial Census of Marion
Co, MS. George and John CARSON with Fleming TYNES appraise the property of
Jesse CROFT, deceased on 12 September 1829 in Marion Co, MS. John CARSON
b.1780, SC is also listed in 1850 census of Yazoo Co, MS. If John and George
are brothers, this could explain the cousin relationship of John CARSON b.abt
1815, MS and Samuel CARSON. John CARSON b.1815, MS is possibly the son of
John CARSON b. abt 1780, SC and Samuel CARSON b.1824, MS is the son of George
CARSON.
There are also several other CARSONs listed in the 1850 and 1860 censuses of
Yazoo County, MS. One is a George CARSON b.1814, MS. I think this George is
a son of George CARSON b.1770/1775, but it is possible that he is a son of
John CARSON b.1780, SC. I have not found George CARSON b.1814, MS after the
1860 census of Yazoo Co, MS.
Samuel R. CARSON (son of George CARSON and Elizabeth ______) b.1824, MS; d.
aft 1880; m. abt 1840, MS Evaline BLACKWELL (daughter of Thornton BLACKWELL
and Permelia PECAFIELD) b.1825, KY; d. bet 1870/1880, MS. They had:
George CARSON b.1841, MS
Thornton CARSON b.1843, MS
Gabriella Ellen CARSON b.1845, MS; m.(1) _____ CHAPMAN; m.(2) A.C. SHARP
Margaret CARSON b.1847, MS
Elbert Hillard CARSON b.3 Sep 1854, MS
Gilbert CARSON b.1855, MS
The first record of Samuel is in the 1843 Pike Co, MS tax list. He is
then in the 1850 census of Washington Parish, LA, the 1870 census of Yazoo
Co, MS and then in the 1880 census of Holmes Co, MS. I have nothing else on
him at this time.
I descend from Elbert Hillard CARSON. He m.(1) 9 Jun 1881, Rankin Co, MS

If you connect to this family, I would like to correspond with you. I am a
direct descendant of Andrew and of "Wash" Carson. My cousin still owns the
land where the cemetery in Henry Co TN is.

Hello Karen, I assume you meant for this to go to the CARSON list, so I have
forwarded it there. It appears that the 1850 federal census for Washington
County is in the process of being transcribed, perhaps it will be completed
soon?

Eric,
You are the first person I have seen that may have information on the Orange
County, NC Carsons. My ancestors were the Alexander Carsons who settled in
Orange County about 1750-55. I have been unable to learn where they were
from. Have learned that most of the earlier settlers were from Scotland and
Ireland and they came through PA and then on the Carolina as a group.
Would appreciate any help that you may give. I have looked up information
on Moses Carson, James, wondering it these fellows were related in any way.
Thank you, Betty Maynard

I think these Carsons may be related to Carsons I
have researched. Kit Carson's father was named
Lindsey (or Lindsay); he went to KY and MO.
Lindsay's brother Andrew has a will on file in NC
Archives (indexed in NC records at the DAR). The
family originally came from PA and before that
Ireland (they were Scots-Irish). Some of them
settled in Iredell Co., NC. Andrew's son A.W.
"Wash" Carson eventually went to Henry Co., TN in
the early 1800s and is buried there in a family
plot near the town of Puryear.
If these are your Carsons, you may want to locate
some of Kit's biographies - there is some early
family info in them. They should be available in
any good-sized public library.

Thank you, Fred, I have checked records online for Nebraska and been quite
fortunate with later ancestors. I really need to trace William's activity
in Ohio. As far as I can tell, according to Andreas' History of the State
of Nebraska, he and other pioneers from a colony in Ohio established the
town of Gibbon, Nebraska. It's a very interesting read:

Do you have any dates to reference William and David, or others?

Looking for siblings, mother's name, other links to David CARSON
(1785-1852) of Baltimore, MD; married, in 1816, Sarah Tilden Hynson
(1793-1889). Believed to be the son of John CARSON, possibly of Harford
Co MD and/or York Co PA, but no definite evidence of this is known.
Please see my database at

for other Carsons. Thanks,
John Ottinger
