I have an ancestor, Janet Bell CARRUTHERS. She married John PATTINSON
of
Cumberland, and had several children including my next ancestor Sarah, and
one before the marriage - Thomas. According to the wedding certificate, she
was born about 1851, her father was called Walter CARRUTHERS, and she lived
at the time of her marriage (1874 if I remember right) at Gibson's Hill,
Tundergarth, Dumfries (I think - the writing is not clear) working as a
servant.
According to a census entry, she was born about 1850 or 51, in Scotland. I
think she was also known as Jane.
The IGI has a christening for Janet Bell CARRUTHERS on 6 April 1851, Saint
Mungo, Dumfries, father Walter. However I know the IGI is not exhaustive,
so this may not be the only possibility.
I'm English, and relatively new to genealogy, so may not be familiar with
specifically Scottish matters. I think I can access Scottish records, eg at
the Family Records Centre, but I'm not familiar with them.
If Janet or Walter (whose mother may have also been called Janet or Janet
Bell something) ring any bells with anyone, I'd be very very happy to hear
from you. I'll obviously share information about her descendants if anyone
is interested. Equally I'd be pleased to hear from anyone who has advice on
the best way forward (or back...) with my Scottish line.
Thaks very much,
Ian Williamson.
