Below are the entries for the first of three books on Elbert Co. I will
give you a little history of Elbert Co. that is in the front of the book
which may answer some questions as to the different counties included.
Elbert Co. was created from Wilkes Co. on 10 Dec 1790. "All of Wilkes Co.
on the north side of Broad River from the mouth thereof to the main fork,
then up the south main fork to where it intersects the line dividing the
County of Wilkes from the County of Franklin shall be one county and called
and known by the name of Elbert and all that part of the said county of
Wilkes on the south side of Broad River shall retain the name of Wilkes
County."
Wilkes Co. was created in 1777 from land ceded in 1773 by the Creek and
Cherokee Indians. When the first census was taken in 1790 Elbert Co. was
still a part of Wilkes Co.
On 5 Dec 1811, Madison Co. was created from Elbert, Clarke, Franklin,
Jackson and Oglethorpe Counties. Elbert Co. lost her western portion to
Madison Co. in 1811.

(I think the date of "1797" in this entry may be a typo. The other entries
above it are dated "1798" and the next one is "Jan 1799". The
original
document would have to be checked for accuracy.)
