Morning Chris
I picked up on this as my Kirkmahoe, CARRUTHERS were also shoemakers
as was Sarah's (<1701-1761) grandson Joseph GASS ABT1762-1802 son of
Richard Gass/Gaes x Rachal (<spelling?)
Sarah is buried in the Troqueer Churchyard, I believe the spelling of
Carethers was a parish error & perhaps should read CARRUTHERS. The
CARRUTHERS name was largly unchanged in southern Scotland, finding
variances more in Cumberland, England, Ireland & of course America
where the CARETHERS seem to have settled in the South
Mississippi/Louisiania areas. Regret I have no parents for Sarah.
All the shoemakers travelled extensivly as did my lot, having children
in different parishes makeing tracing the ancestry/wives difficult.
There is a Carruthers/Gass connection in Watchill (Watchhill) Annan
parish, perhaps something to google.
Rgds
Ian Carruthers
Researching: Carruthers in Closeburn & Guillyburn, Kirkmahoe, Urr & Lochmaben.

My 6th GGM was Sara Carethers b: 1700 in Scotland d: 23 July 1761 in

that both Sarah & James may have been from the Dumfries area.
