Hello John Bangs,
I'm Barry Wetherington. Have we talked before? I would be very
interested in the Bangs Line or Tree you mentioned to the Bangs Message
board participant (see msg replicated below), particularly if it sheds light
on our Content Bangs +John Carruthers 1700 - 1752 entry.
I host the Carruthers List (AWA the W'ton Lists). We (on the Bangs &
Carruthers Lists) have had discussions over the last few yrs (although not
much recently) about this issue, w/few resolutions.
Here is what we believe we do know, excerpted from an earlier msg on the
Carruthers-L List:

Rocksolannah is interesting but not the most important - the more
interesting is Content
(Bangs) Carruthers. She is almost certainly Jonathan Bangs's sister before
she (Content) md John Carruthers - the issue is to establish who was
Content's father. This is an important connection for the Carruthers - & to
the New Eng Jonathan Bangs family - Jonathan's father Edwd came over on the
1623 Anne!
To sum up this important early Carruthers likely genealogy - Jonathan
Bangs md Abiah Carruthers & Content Bangs md John Carruthers ie John's
sister Abiah Carruthers md Content's brother Jonathan Bangs & vice-versa.
AND!!!
Jonathan Bangs and John Carruthers bought land 1738 in New Bern, Craven
Co NC next to each other and both moved in 1739 from Mass to NC. (My
judgment is that they were partners of a sort in a seafaring endeavour out
of New Bern NC. bw 6/3/04)
To insure you do not waste time duplicating, if you find time, this is
what we already have:

should have the desc. and marriges between the Bangs and Carruthers sorted
out.........only had indexes down here in deep south Texas.

named as wittn. on will of Jerimiah Murphy in Craven Co., NC Nov. 1750

This could be important for later Carruthers. Even if you just find a

Hi again Carruthers, (& Hodges, Bangs, & Wetheringtons/Witheringtons)
This is fascinating Gen at a very high level! Doris got a helpful
message
started, and thanks to Thomas Carothers & Francis Hodges for developing this
string to a this high level.
http://genforum.genealogy.com/carruthers/
I also have a very high level of interest in this string because this
John
Carruthers (at least ONE of these Johns) is the father of 'my' (presumptive)
GG
Gm' Rocksolannah Carruthers md John Witherington b abt 1703. This Carruthers
discussion is quite helpful to establish the Bangs and particularly 'my'
Witherington Gen connection. Seemingly the very important issue, if not the
seminal issue, is to establish the distinctions of the 2 John Carruthers
(assuming there aren't 3).
Following up, where are the best possible potential sources to look into
this
issue? I would assume that the easily located sources have all been
consulted.
About a yr ago we spent a goodly effort & amount of time following the
seeming
very fertile Bangs connection to the Carruthers. In fact, we located some
quite
interesting connections between the Bangs & Carruthers, including the Dean
Dudley New England Carruthers diagram, the trip by Jonathan Bangs w/John
Carruthers to New Bern NC to buy land, the Bangs seafaring connection, and
much
else included in the Carruthers (& Bangs) Archives:
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/c/carruthers.html
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/b/bangs.html
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/w/witherington.html
I did wish someone could spend some time in the Yale Archives w/ the
Bangs
papers. And in the quality sources mentioned by Francis Hodges, who has been
at
this for long and quality time:
"Francis Hodges (not Hodge) married John's daughter, Frances Carruthers. I
think
this is the same Francis Hodges who wound up in Dobbs County, about thirty
or
forty miles west of New Bern; we have proof that he was an uncle of the
prominent Capt. Simon Bright Jr. (d. 1776), which is why I think Francis
must
have had a sister who was Capt. Bright's mother.
When Francis Hodges declared headright in Craven in 1746, he listed six
while
males in his household. I think these males (children at the time) are the
other
Hodges listed with Francis in a 1769 Dobbs County tax roll. They are (1)
Joshua
Hodges, who married Ann Raiford and later moved to Georgia. We know from
Joshua's Bible records that he was born in 1736, and that is why I do not
think
John Carruthers (Joshua' maternal grandfather) could have been born as late
as
1708, since he would have been a grandfather before he was thirty years
old!,(2)
Francis Hodges Jr (I also have proof tht he moved to Georgia), (3) John
Hodges,
(4) Richard Hodges, who stayed in NC and from whom I think I am descended
(not
yet proved).
http://genforum.genealogy.com/carruthers/messages/618.html
As to Content Carruthers, has it yet been proved that she was from the
prominent
Bangs family of Barnstable, Massachusetts?"
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/b/bright.html
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/h/hodges.html
Also, there is quite a sea going connection: Capt Bright, Capt Bangs, and
a
number of W'ton connections, AWA the New Bern & extensive New England
connection
to the ocean, etc. (why did Jonathan Bangs leave the Bangs New England home
for
New Bern & property there? Was there a sea-going connection?)
There is much to consider here, and I've barely touched on the quite
extensive high quality contributions of Thomas Carothers, see above & below.
