There are so many different variations of the surname, some are as follows:
Carruthers
Carrithers
Carrothers
Caruthers
Carothers
Cruthers
Cradeur
Cruchers
Crutters
They are all derived from the same basic deriviative. It is all part of the original
spelling of
Carrutherys still present in Scotland. I have been collecting data all pretty well all of
them
and have found that researchers have been using several different spellings for the same
families. It makes it difficult to weed out what data is correct or not. Just today with
information from the Carruthers mailing list I can see for the first time how the various
branches tie together, from the Muswald, the Holmains, the Dormont's, Rammerscales, Of
Isles,
Over Denbie, Of ButterQuhat, Nether Denbie, Breckenhill, Woodfoot/Milne, 1st Breas,
Neth/Warmanbie, Of Whitecroft, Hardriggs, In Hetland, Breconsyde, to name a few of the
Carruthers lines I see in my database. I have been at this for about 8 years and the base
keeps
growing. If you have info on your line I would be most interested in what you have, I more
than
likely have some of it.....Glen

Glen - I just visited your Carruthers web page. In your list of spellings
of the name, you omitted the spelling CARUTHERS. My ancestor, William
(wife, Margaret McCrosky) who came from Pa. to Rockbridge County, Va. in
mid-1700s, spelled it that way, according to all the legal/family documents
that I have found. Family legend has it that two Carruthers brothers got
into a bitter argument, and one deleted the second R, but I don't know if
that is true and/or if it happened in the U.S. or in Scotland. I can assure
you, however, that the Caruthers branch of the family is strong and well.
See, for example, William Alexander Caruthers, author of "The Cavaliers of
Virginia," published mid-1830s.
I have a copy of a marvelous paper written about the Caer of Ruther
(Carruthers, Scotland) by another Canadian Carruthers, but I cannot send it
to you or anyone for publication on the web until (or unless) I can locate
him and obtain his permission.
