Son of James Carruthers and unknown mother
Hugh married Sarah Purviance Abt 1740 Northern Ireland They had 7 known
children,
Sarah daughter of John Purviance, Jr. and Margaret McKnight

Notes for Hugh
was in Augusta Co., Virginia 1742
1759 Land grant in Orange Co., North Carolina
1760 purchased land in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina
===================
In 1759 we find Hugh selling his grant getting ready to move to Mecklenburg
Co., North Carolina. He probably already had family there. It appears that in
the late 1750's many of the Scoth-Irish were leaving Augusta Co., Virginia.
Many were followers of the Reverend Alexander Craighead.

Militia Companies in Augusta County, in I742.
Among the collections of manuscripts made by the late Dr. Lyman Draper, and
left by him to the Historical Society of Wisconsin are lists of the men
composing nine companies of militia, in Augusta County, Va., in I742. The
total number of companies was twelve, but the rolls of only nine were
obtained, or have been preserved.
William Beverley was county lieutenant, and James Patton colonel
Hugh was in: # 8
Militia company of George Robinson, Augusta Co., Virginia 1742
"Virginia Historical Magazine Vol. 13" p. 93 states "Hugh Caruthers was in
militia in Augusta County in 1742 under Capt. George Robinson".
