CAPT JOHN Caruthers.
Merchant in Lexington, Va. Earliest record is that he served on a jury
with his brother Samuel in 1778, Commissioner of the Specific Tax for the
county of Rockbridge 1781-2; Captain of a militia company 1788-9. In 1791 he
was recommended by the Justices of Rockbridge as a suitable person for
appointment as Justice. In 1801 was appointed by President Jefferson Marshal
of the proposed western district of Virginia, but declined the appointment
(Waddell, p, 143). Sheriff of Rockbridge County 1804-6.
Will, on record in Lexington, makes provision for wife Sally. Son Isaac
house and lot in Lexington. Grandson, Geo. W. Shields $500, grandson John N.
Shields $500. when he becomes 21; granddaughter Mary Shields $300. when. she
becomes 20; granddaughter Julia Caruthers, daughter of William, a negro girl;
granddaughter Ann Eliza Carothers, daughter of William. a negro girl. "All
the rest of my estate to be sold and divided equally between the heirs of my
son William, and my son Isaac Caruthers and my son-in-law Alexander Shields."
excutors: Isaac Caruthers, Alexander Shields, Jno. F. Caruthers. Will dated
July 20 1819, proved Sept. .10, 1822. Witnesses-. James Caruthers, Jr., and
others.
William Caruthers of De Soto, Fla, says:
"Capt. John Caruthers' first wife was a Poague, or Poage,as Waddell spells
the name. Dr. Brown(Rev.Dr. William Brown, long the editor of the Central
Presbyterian) says when he was a small boy his mother took him on the horse
behind her and made a visit; on the way they took dinner at the house Wm.
Caruthers (son.of Capt. John) his mother's cousin- her mother was a Poague
and I suppose is a sister of his {William Caruthers) mother.
