Hi Carruthers,
While RootsWeb has changed recently, the archives are FULL of our
Carruthers Gen, all free (see below)!
GedComs are essentially simple text (.txt), set up by the Mormons some
20 or so years ago, that, when imported into a Gen program (designed for
their own PAF such program, but every program now accepts them),
automatically produces a Gen Tree, just as it also does for almost every
other Gen program. Hard to imagine something else so free and easy. BUT,
please do let me know if you are successful - I'd like to participate.
BTW, RootsWeb does offer Free extensive web space for anyone who will
use it for Gen. You can find it at:

Perhaps the largest Gen Tree in the world (470 million names on file,
including 21,192 'Carruthers') is:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/
and its completely FREE also!
Our extensive Carruthers Archives (about 10 yrs of email messages) are

Subject: Re: [CARRUTHERS] Carruthers family trees - GEDCOM
Hi Ian,
I agree with you with regard to having a centralised site devoted entirely
to Carruthers Ged files being stored and shared freely among the
Carruthers
clan. As one who is not exactly what you could call an IT expert, on the
contrary, I am only skilled enough to work the basics of my computer.
However, if there were someone who was both skilled and willing to produce
a
site, I would be the first to back them and give full support to the
project.
Ged files I find a little confusing at times as I don't relate to people
as
easily as with a pyramid type tree, where you can see where people sit in
relation to one another rather than a list of names you have to interpret
yourself, this may be laziness on my part, but unless you are used to and
familiar with Ged Com Files, they can seem complicated to the novice
researcher. With that in mind, if such a site could be constructed, would
it be possible to include a simple tree type record in parallel with the
Ged
File perhaps?
I may be totally wrong about the Ged files, I am only going on what I have
seen myself so far, there may be better and more readable user friendly
formats that I have not come across. In any event, please keep me
informed
and up to speed with the outcome of your request.
Best wishes and kind regards. Malcolm.
