Chris & Sarah,
I have no illusions that old Robert was rich. He was listed as a horse
dealer on his son's christening record. His son, Robert Salkeld CARRUTHERS
emigrated to South Australia in 1850 on an assisted passage which suggested
that he was not well healed either.
And Sarah I will use Google from now on! I've taken the subtle hint!
Does anyone know what the assisted passage bit was??????

I think English Damside might have referred to a (small) area rather
than a
street, and there easily could have been a gate as Carlisle is a border and
fortified town - lots of streets in England are called something gate. So I
would guess English Damside Gate as being at North End of Damside. I don't
know when the railway was built either, that would change the geography
quite a bit.
Some of my McGarr ancestors lied at English Damside - they were not rich to
say the least. Most of the were weavers
Also I have never come across "Scottish Damside" !
Chris
Yes, thanks. That's what I found, but not "Damside English Gate" as Phil
phrased it. I figured it was the same place....what do you think?
