I think you might be right! I did get a response to the Damside question
last year and it suggested that it was an area just outside the wall of the
city. The area would have been rural which sort of fits with his occupation
of 'horse dealer'. I assume that means he sold horses.

I think English Damside might have referred to a (small) area rather
than a
street, and there easily could have been a gate as Carlisle is a border and
fortified town - lots of streets in England are called something gate. So I
would guess English Damside Gate as being at North End of Damside. I don't
know when the railway was built either, that would change the geography
quite a bit.
Some of my McGarr ancestors lied at English Damside - they were not rich to
say the least. Most of the were weavers
Also I have never come across "Scottish Damside" !
