Hi Terry and All,
This is a response to your email, Terry, but I'm posting it to the list
in the hopes that it strikes a note with someone!
I wish I could tell you more about William Carruthers, but no such
luck. He was b. ca. 1740 (a really aproximate date) and simply shows up
in Louisiana (my home state, by the way) in the late 1700s. He is
stated as being "from North Carolina."
As far as John, his will is probated in 1751 in Craven Co., NC, and he
says he is a merchant; he lists wife Content Carruthers and children
Rocksolannah Witherinton (m. John Witherinton), Frances Hodges (m.
Francis Hodges), John Carruthers, Joseph Carruthers, Sarah Rice, and
William Carruthers. William Carruthers, by the way, was not there for
the distribution of proceeds from the will -- making me think that he
was already out of NC.
Interestingly, he gives a slave woman "Enow" to a Rebekah McCarthy; and
my William Carruthers (who I think is John's son) m. Margaret McCarthy.
This makes me suspicious that I've found the right guy.
If you (or anyone else) knows anything more about John and Content
Carruthers, especially regarding their son William, I'd appreciate it if
you could let me know!
Cheers,
Gordon
