As for maritime endevours, John Carruthers WAS in a Big one w/ Jon Bangs, whose GF? was
on the Anne, 2d? ship (to the Mayflower) to land in NEng. Big Gen project - I am holding
in my hands as we 'speak,' the rather complete 17x11 Bangs Gen chart (Thank you
Vam) done by Dean Dudley of Boston. bw)
"Also, I see a John Carruthers listed in South Carolina records as captain of a
galley called the Molley. But, the record also sometimes lists him as being of England,
so not sure it's the same person who was living in New Bern. . . . " David
It could VERY WELL be 'our' J Carruthers. I would VERY MUCH like to put Jon
Bangs as a crewmember on any Carruthers ship!!! Jon Bangs md Abiah Carruthers. Perhaps
the listings 'of England' were of the 'new New England.'

Subject: Re: will of JOHN MARTIN 1737 Bath - BLACKBEARD ROCSOLANAH
Thanks Martha for the information on Blackbeard. You do have to wonder about the link
between him and some of the families we're researching! Very intriguing!
Your mention of Woodard/Woodward caught my attention. In 1785, John Rice, Jr. sold
land in Bladen County to a Christopher Woodward of Wake County. Additionally, early
Woodwards (from Dublin, Ireland) were affiliated with Nathaniel Rice. I also seem to
remember a Henry Woodward in Charleston, SC in the late 1600's and early 1700's
who may have been associated (or at least they probably knew each other) with the Quaker
Edward Mayo (who I think served as an attorney for John Gibbs, father of Anne who married
Nathaniel Rice). Edward Mayo as I understand it was in the Princess Anne/Currituck
area, but apparently had dealings in Charleston as well as I see his name there in some
records. I will try to dig out those records again, although may not be able to get to
it until this weekend.
I'm amazed at how some of these families were in the Albemarle region of North
Carolina and then show up in Charleston or the Cape Fear area. Porter, Mosely &
Lillington come to mind right away, but I'm sure there were others.
Also, I see a John Carruthers listed in South Carolina records as captain of a
galley called the Molley. But, the record also sometimes lists him as being of England,
so not sure it's the same person who was living in New Bern.

The late John Oden, a highly respected researcher, has speculated with a great deal of
circumstantial evidence that Blackbeard was the son of one Captain James Beard. Beard was
known to have a son and a daughter and the daughter's name was Susie. What happened to
the son is murkey but John made a strong case for him being Blackbeard. He also made a
strong case for the daughter, Susie, being Susannah bc 1695 who md John Martin Franck of
Craven precinct, the wealthiest of the Paletine immigrants. Susannah inherited Captain
Beard's plantation in the Bath area.
It is written that one of Blackbeards' wives was Mary Ormond - background unknown.
There were two Ormond families in Bathtown - that of Wyatt and that of William. I descend
from William b in 1696 and inherited his son's Prayer Book with all the genealogical
information. The relationship between the two is not known and it is not known where they
came from. Both Wyatt and William were financially high up the totem pole. It is highly
likely that a lot of people in the Bath area benefited from the activities of Blackbeard
and I highly suspect William Ormond did.
One Joel Marten had a will written 1715 and proved 1716 - chilldren - John, Elizabeth
Penny, Willliam, Mary Woodard, and Ann, grandson Joel Marten, grandson John Woodard son of
Henry - wife Elizabeth. Found in Beaufort Co Deed Book 1. I have the abstract book but it
is also on the Beaufort Co archives page.

ORMOND AND BLACKBEARD

Robert E. Lee, in his book "Blackheard, The Pirate: Reappraisal of his Life and
Times" states that MARY ORMOND was the last wife of BLACKBEARD. Was MARY a member of
the WILLIAM ORMOND family of Bath County? Were the Ormonds connected with BLACKBEARD in
any way. Where did WILLIAM ORMAND come from.

MARTIN, CARRUTHERS

Looking for a connection between JOEL MARTIN and possibly JOHN MARTIN. The will of
JOHN MARTIN 01-AUG-1737 BATH COUNTY, list his wife as ROCSOLANAH CARRUTHERS MARTIN. His
children were JOHN MARTIN, JOSEPH MARTIN AND ELIZABETH MARTIN, there was probably a fourth
since his wife was pregnant at the time of writing the will and mentioned as a devisee.
