Hi Martha, & ALL who wish to access the good stuff on NC Archives:
Did you download that DJVu viewer? If so, this Link (below) will demo the viewing
benefit/ power of this image viewer, supposedly (and it does seem quite so) significantly
better than JPEGs:
http://www.nkp.cz/start/knihcin/digit/KatalogCD/EN/COLLEC_1/gallery.htm
The collection of Arabic manuscripts in the National Library of the Czech Republic
Click on any one of the 100 thumbnails.
The point, as I understand it, is that when you visit the NC Archives site, you will be
able to view and D/L faster, bring up your image faster, ans saving it will store in a
much smaller and better image. Worthwhile goal if true, and it seems to be so.
I'm not the expert, & many Thanks to Billy, who pioneered (see msg below), but
there are definite benefits using this technology. For example, the Jonathan Bangs will of
1743 displays beautifully ('my wife Abiah Bangs,' 'sister Thankful
Covell?,' 'dau 'Betty Bangs,' 'Uncle John Carruthers,' etc, but
to get to it the first time is near agonizing. Still, compared to a trip to Raleigh and
time spent to 'check out the will (even if that is still allowed), it's a piece of
cake. Will take about 5 minutes the first time, plus time to install the DJVuer from the
NC Archives site (I highly recomend 'auto-install'), but then is much quicker to
use.
This LizardTech company apparently goes to extreme lenghts to protect the product, to
the point it conceals the Link Address (URL) on many of its web Pages. Apperently, it must
be installed from the Client site, in this case, from the:

The DJVu viewer allows you to view the document (Bang's will 1743 here) almost as
though you are looking at it in focus from just inches away. Getting to the record/
document you want requires a bit of patience until you get the hang of it, and more
patience. The first image took a few moments, then sped up.
One trick page requires you to select an image icon from on the right (looks like a
tilted boomerang in a box), and of course, there is the 'click on the "MARS!
Online Catalog..." hyperlink mentioned by Billy at the Link:

There has been a problem to get to the site sometimes (Internal Server Error), but return

| Ok am reluctant to forward this on because I do NOT understand the Mars | system but
some of you might. If you don't understand it, don't ask me. Am in hopes the
archive will change their system one of these days.

Subject: [NCDOBBS] NC Dept. of Archives Probate Search Tip
I just discovered a tip that may help people.
To search for all Wills in a particular county, click at the top under the
Quick Navagition box, Advanced Search, then SELECT (click the box beside it)
the Probate Records section. In your first search criteria, enter the County
name. Be sure to change the maximum number of hits to 50!!
Best of wishes
