Hi All Carruthers & interested, RE: Carruthers early NC land records.
The essence of this Carruthers early NC land records list may have been posted earlier
(including by Deborah Hanson of Texas) but is nonetheless interesting. In fact, I see it
is a portion of the records as posted by Elizabeth Moore back in 1960 (which has been
earlier addressed online, including the Index to the Hawk book), and as discussed by,
among others, Deborah Carothers Hanson (her letter of 4 Dec 2003) & Ann D Ohmsen in
her extensive & complete letters of a few weeks ago & recent 11 Feb 2004, the
latter of which has not yet been posted to any List. Ann has done some (actually, a lot
of) quite excellent research & writing, in particular her determination there were 2
Rocksolannahs ('Rocksolana' as listed below for the 1738 transaction Carruthers to
Martin) in these records:
"*1738: March 20th , William Carruthers gives to his sister, Rocksolana Martin, late
widow, a tract of 200 acres on north side of Lower Broad Creek, near the mouth of Neuse
River where she now lives, near Green's Greek, Patented by said William Carruthers
30th June 1738, ( Sarah Martin and Jacob Hoover, Witnesses)"
Ann is herself a Martin (Desc of John Martin d1737/8 Beaufort Co NC naming in his will,
among others, his wife Rocksolanah and his wife's brother John Carruthers & Wit Wm
Carruthers) &, working w/Bill Moore, has sent me 2 excellent treatises, including her
4 Aug 2003 & 22 Oct 2003 proof of the 2 Rocksolannahs for Bill Moore, which Bill has
generously shared with us) but Ann is not yet online. I hope to eventually, with her
permission, post all her works to the Lists. Meanwhile, this Carruthers Land list from
Marc Parrish to Bill King, while a bit cumulative, is interesting.
Barry
PS: One easily read (and so many are not easy) ref to Rocksolana is from the Prayer Book/
Bible, portions of which are posted online (and in a very recent List email) for
W'tons in the WringtonAncestors website in the Photos section on p11, see below:
