Hello Bangs & Carruthers List,
Ive had the opportunity to review the materials sent to me by Vam York
(Thank you Vam), including:
1] pages 157-9 of corrections & additions to: the Register, vol viii p
368", the Bangs Family.
2] pages 246-248 of the Oct 1961 NC Wills?, featuring The (NC) Will of
Jonathan Bangs, b1698 md Ruth (?) (nc)1727, then MD Abiah Bangs, d ~1743.
3] A beautiful oversized typed/typeset chart, Genealogy of the Bangs
Family, by Dean Dudley, of Boston, seemingly prepared Jun 30 1864, possibly
Vol 9 p157.
Initially, on the entire oversized typed/typeset chart, Genealogy of the
Bangs Family, by Dean Dudley, of Boston, there is no ref to any event not
in N Eng or NY. Apparently, for the Dean, if it didnt happpen in New ...,
it didnt happen. His chart does acknowledge the Dillinghams & Covells
(Thankful, Jonathan b1698's sis), but not Carruthers. Also curiously, while
he footnotes Joshua Bangs b 1685 md Mehetabel Clark, he does not locate them
on the chart - this is Joshua Bangs who had Bangs Island named after him,
and was featured in the Register discussion of the Bangs Family. It is
therefore probably consistent that there was no mention of Jonathans
marriage to Abiah Carruthers.
However, the points I want to develop are these, working w/i the confines
of the 3 refs mentioned above, and guided by Christines work, solidified by
Betty & Martha & Vam, et al those who contributed.
A] The Will of Jonathan Bangs,
B] The Will of Abiah Bangs (excerpts), and
C] 1745 Acknowledgement of Debt by NC men to Nathan Bangs, Master of the
Sloop Endeavor.
These documents, and the footnotes of the documents, establish to a high
level of confidence that:
The Will is that of Jonathan Bangs , the son of Jonathan Bangs & Eliz of
Harwich;
He went to Putnam NY;
Thankful Covell is his natural sister, md John Covell;
Abiah Bangs is his Loving Wife;
Betty Bangs is his Well beloved daughter;
He appointed his uncle Jno Carruthers Executor;
Abiah Bangs will of 1755 (she died ~1760) mentions her dau Betty Bangs, her
cousin Eliz Hobbs, and her siblings John, Wm, Eliz, and Mary Carruthers;
Jonathan, being then a mariner of Harwich, bought a town lot in New Bern
Craven Co NC and a tract of land near the Neuse River (Rocksolannah
Caruthers d/o John Carruthers occupied a Prime town lot in New Bern, also
not far from the Neuse);
Jon also bought 2 other New Bern NC plots, one of which was later conveyed
by Abiah Bangs, probably the very same Abiah Bangs who witnessed the 1751
will of John Carruthers, f/o Rocksolannah Carruthers, and, lastly;
That Nathan Bangs of Barnstable N Eng entered into a NC agreement w/Wm
Wickliffe & Richd Nixon in 1744 for a bonus of 150 Lbs for the prompt
arrival of the Endeavor at Boston w/I 30 days. This ties Nathan & the Bangs
in with NC.
Frankly, everything fits so well, its difficult to see why or how this
situation can be, or should be, refuted.
Dean Dudleys inability to link up Joshua (not Jonathan here) Bangs to
his family likely also prevented him from following another clue, had he
been inclined to do so. Dudleys footnote does show that Joshua Bangs b
1685 md Mehetabel Clark, was the parent of Nathan Bangs b 11/23/1714. But
the 1745 Agreement/sailing bonus establishes a parallal (to Jonathan Bangs)
sea connection of the Bangs w/the Carruthers/NC. And remember the Christine
& Betty developed discussions/ facts.
Ive run out of time now, w/o addressing the issue of Content (Bangs?
Carruthers? Covell? Or perhaps Content Smith md John D (Dillingham?) [center
on the Dudley Gen page], apparently s/o Elkanah md Mary)!
Good hunting!
Barry

Hi Bangs List,
Still trying to chase down this Bangs Carruthers connection. We've had a
couple more people confirming some part of the connection, and see the
extensive messages posted in Jan & Feb, but still have not heard from anyone
who has had access to the:
"NEW ENGLAND HISTORICAL JOURNAL AND GEN. REGISTER" and/or original source
records who has checked the factual reports that initiated this search. At
the bottom, I review some of this Bangs Carruthers connection.
To recap, I'll outline the relevant factual 'findings' for which we would
like some confirmation or refutation:
1) See Jan & Feb email compendiums sent by BW
