Hi Tommy
It would appear you already have excellent research completed on the Carruthers
and associate families.
As you already know, the name and geography of Carruthers originated in south
Dumfriesshire, Scotland. The ancient lands of Carruthers including an Iron Age
fort, the site of the mediaeval village of Carruthers, an ancient chapel and
current farm are located 7 miles due east of Lockerbie and just north of the
Kirtle Water. Mouswald, Holemains Dalton etc. are located in south Annandale
approx 15 miles S.E. of original Carruthers lands. There were six mediaeval
strongholds associated with the family; Mouswald, Holemains Hallguards, Raffles,
Hoddam and Cornel. These Border strong points were rectangular keeps with
massive walls built circa 15th century to a hight of 20/30ft and surrounded by a
curtain wall. The first five are all in south Annandale but Cornel is located in
North Dumfriesshire, at the confluence of the Moffat water and the Cornel burn.
With the exception of Hoddam they are all sadly ruinous. Mouswald has three
walls standing, and Cornal the remains of one corner wall. A pile of rubble on a
rock proninance marks the spot of Holemains. A mansion house now stands on the
site of Hallguards and only a mound in a field shows where Raffles once stood.
The Ordnance Survey maps UK, Pathfinder series, nos. 530,531,and 519 shows all
the ancient Carruthers holdings in South Annandale.
The House of Douglas is very well documented. There are several genealogical
books written on the numerous branches.
The family of Queensbury is directly descended from Drumlanrig. The family of
Morton is descended from Andrew, youger son of Sir Archibald de Douglas. The
Douglas family originated in Lanarkshire but later had considerable holdings in
North Dumfriesshire and many other parts of Scotland.
I should point out that during the 15th/16th century the Carruthers of Mouswald
and Douglas of Drumlanrig were not exactly on speaking terms.
Regards.
Jim Carruthers.

Hi Jim
I am Tom Carothers a Holmains decendant, I have just finished my early Douglas
line . my line steps out at John Carruthers 7th Holmains 3rd Baron thru son
William & Marg Porteous Carruthers, from here I have failed in following the
Douglas down , not catching the relationship, which line of Douglas,
Queensberry, Morton,Drumlanrig, ect. I am decendant of James "The Good" and
understand the lines well. This has been importaint for two lines of us
Carruthers ,of the same line but distant , to come to early America. There are
other Carruthers here in the states married into my line, one is our Mouswald
and Dalton cousins.
I suspect more, I am at alose on those of us that went to Ireland, my line
prides it's self we came streight out of Scotland .
I have not share these findings with cousin Glenn David Carruthers of Canada
yet, I would like to compare and add to my database the Scot Carruthers and any
around the world that decend from our Groups. I also would like to know if you
have a handle on where all these land holdings we had are located , I don't
understand the local of Mousewald, to Holmains, and on to the rest of holdings.
If you understand that, please educate me .
Thank You for your time and concideration.
Tom "Tommy" Carothers MI USA.

Hi Gareth
Christian Carruthers was the eldest daughter of John Carruthers 12th of
Holemains and 8th Baron. His wife was Charlotte, 2nd daughter of Sir Robert
Laurie of Maxwelton.
Christian married in Edinburgh to John Erskine of Aberdona. There is a wealth of
information on the Erskine Murray family contained within the Barjarg
Manuscripts, housed in the National Library of Scotland.
