Welcome to Carruthers-L marvin dellinger
Here is a recent msg that you just missed FYI:
Hi Betty, [James b1750 (Scot/PA) John Carothers bScot md Sarah dNC 1798]
You may have done far more than I'm going to suggest but are you or have you
been a member of Ancestry.com? They have more of the latest censuses & databases
than Rootsweb. Ancestry allows 14 days free - be sure you have plenty of free
time to use it - or its a couple hundred bucks for a yr - a good deal if you
have the intertest & time. Have you checked
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ ?
Was your "the John Carothers born in Scotland who married Sarah and died in
Mecklenburg, NC, 1798" listed in the 1790 census?
Al;so, our Archives:
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/c/carruthers.html
covers much, especilly when posted? Can you post an Outline Descendant Tree,
such as this one:

Subject: SAMUEL CAROTHERS
| Hi Barry,
|
| So far as I know my Samuel Carothers' father was the James born
| 4/17/1750 (either in Scotland or PA) and his grandfather was the John
| Carothers born in Scotland who married Sarah and died in Mecklenburg, NC,
| 1798. My Samuel married first Nancy Neely and they had two or three sons.
| Then he married Rachel Robertson either in SC or TN and they had a number of
| children. Haven't been able to confirm this second marriage but it seems to
| be true. I had a difficult time placing my Harriet--in 1850 there is a
| household for Rachel Carothers in Madison Co. TN (no Samuel but of course he
| died in 1847) with a number of children listed. No Harriet was listed there,
| but a Robertson researcher told me he found Harriet in the household of a
| relative of Rachel's.
|
| It "appears" all this information is true but I suppose nothing in
| written in stone. Yes, I believe Family Search is often incorrect, but of
| course other sites have incorrect information, too.
|
| Thanks again. Sorry I have nothing on Rocksolannah....
|
| Sincerely,
|
| Betty
Hello Barry,
Can't remember if we have corresponded before. My great-grandmother was
Harriet Burline Carothers, born abt. 1830, Madison Co. TN, died 1900, Carroll
Co., MS. She married William James Woodell, 1853, in Madison Co. TN. I
believe her parents to be Samuel Carothers and his second wife, Rachel
Robertson Carothers. Have been interested in your Carothers info; however,
there are a few descrepancies between your information on Rootsweb and that
of
Familysearch.org.
Family Search says Samuel Carothers was born 31 March, 1786, in
Mecklenburg, NC and died in 1847, Madison Co. TN, not Tipton Co. TN. And it
says his mother was Agnes NEELY, not Agnes Woods. Also, it says James
Carothers, his father, was born 17 April, 1750 in Cumberland, PA and not in
Dumfrieshire, Scotland. So which is correct? Just wondering......
Thank you for any information.
Sincerely,
Betty Catherwood
