Hi Betty,
We have a common GGGG-etc. grandfather in James Carothers. Your Samuel was
my James Jr.'s older brother.
I am replying personally instead of to the site, because most of the
information I have is about the same, but from different sources, mainly
family bibles and letters.
The only listing I find in my records of the ancestral John Carothers, is
reference to Will Book A page 209 4/2/1798 Mecklenburg, N.C, the will of
Sarah Carothers, wife of John, of Cumberland Co., Penn. The list of children
includes James Carothers, and grandsons James and Samuel and other. This is
one of the earliest changes from Carruthers to Carothers.
James Carothers, the James born 4/17/1750, second wife was Agnes Woods.
Here's where a lot of the confusion of Neely's and Carothers comes in:
Children of James and Mary (Neely)Carothers--
Hannah-born 11/15/1776
John-born 7/20/1778
Sarah-born 9/10/1780
Moses-born 7/30/1782
Children of James and Agnes (Woods) Carothers--
Samuel-born 3/31/1786--married Nancy Neely
James Jr.-born10/25/1787--married Margaret Swan Neely (my g-g-g-grandfather)
Mary-born 5/11/1790--married Jonathan Neely
Thomas-born 1792--married Peggy Neely
William-born 9/21/1796--married Dorcas Dinsmore -- Only one that didn't
marry a Neely
I don't find a sixth child.
The other county listed where James Carothers died; I have listed 1847 in
Tipton County Tn. for his death.
The house mentioned at York Districk S.C. which James built in 1803 was in
the Carothers family until 1923, is owned by Duke Power. The house I believe
is still standing on that property, might have even been restored.
I could email you scanned images of all the information I have on Carothers,
Neely's, Matthews--they all run together. I'm not researching this line,
just the Hodges line right now. If you have a dial-up connection it might
take awhile, with a satellite or cable connection, just a couple of minutes
at best.
Regards,
Earl Hodges

Subject: Re: [Carruthers] Carruthers in Cumberland Co. PA
Hello,
My Carothers/Caruthers line apparently goes back to Cumberland, PA.
I
had been told this before but it's difficult to see where my own family
fits in
with some of the other Caruthers lines.
Familysearch.org lists James
Caruthers born 17 April, 1750 in Cumberland, PA. His first wife was Mary
Neely and
second Agnes Neely. By 1776 James was in Mecklenburg, NC, the year of his
first marriage. I see no listing for children of his first marriage, but
he had
six by Agnes Neely (I believe the two Neelys were sisters), including my
great-greatgrandfather. It lists my great-great-grandfather Samuel
Caruthers as
born 31 March, 1786, in Mecklenburg, NC, though later the family settled
in York
Co. SC. He moved on to Madison Co. TN, and it says he died there, though
I
have also heard he died in another county. I believe my Samuel married
twice
but his second wife (my great-great-grandmother) seems to have been Rachel
Robertson, daughter of Charles Robertson of SC, later Madison Co. TN.
I do not know if this John Caruthers who lived in Cumberland, PA in
1800 was a brother or cousin of my ancestor James but I would like to
trace my
Caruthers line back to Scotland, if possible. Does anyone out there know
the
name of James Carothers' (born in Cumberland, PA) father?
I now have found out that more of my ancestors than I knew about
owned
slaves (I believe Samuel Carothers had a few in TN). It is terrible to
think
about, of course, and I am not proud to have had ancestors who were
slaveowners.
Any help with my Caruthers line appreciated.
Sincerely,
Betty Catherwood
