Dear list.
I know who the Mary Walker below is, but does anyone know who the John and
Samuel Caruthers "of the jury," was?
Thanks,
Jean Wilson

According to a Caruthers family paper (author unknown), written about
1895,
Waddell's Annals of Augusta County contains the following (p. 164):
"On the 14th of May (1778) the court (of Rockbridge County) sat for the
trial of Mary Walker, wife of John Walker, who stood charged 'with
speaking words maintaining the power and authority of the King and Parliament
of
Great Britain over the United States of America. A jury was impaneled,
consisting of Henry McClung, William Ramsey, John and Samuel Caruthers, Hugh
Barkley, William Paxton, and others, and after due trial the accused was
pronounced guilty of the charge preferred."

From "A History of Rockbridge Co, Virginia" by Oren F.
Morton, 1920: page
82: "May 14--Mary, wife of John Walker, found guilty of
uttering words
sustaining the authority of king and parliament. Damage of 15 and 1/2
pounds and costs." The previous page tells that this took place in the
Rockbridge Courts in 1778.
NOTE: Her treatment must have been quite harsh as she was reported dying
shortly after her release.
