Marilyn, the James Caruthers that may have been the one to show up in
Mecklenburg, NC appears to have gone to MC from Cumberland County,
Pennsylvania. The Cumberland County Historical Society, Carlisle, Pa.
has some information on him. I am just not sure if he is our ancestor
because our ancestor was supposed to have come from Ireland/Scotland
directly to the Hampshire County, Virginia area. At least that is what
we always thought. My cousin Bruce and I are trying to figure out how
to restart our research on our "Old" James Caruthers from the North
Carolina aspect.

Subject: Re: [CARRUTHERS] Carruthers areas in Dumfriesshire
Hi, Jackie,
I would be interested in the James that went from Pennsylvania to North
Carolina -
Mechlenburg/Cabarrus County - and later Sullivan County, TN. and who
possibly is my GGGgrandfather and father of my GGgrandfather, Joshua,
who married
Nancy Mercer (c. 1823). They moved to Ohio and then to Cass County,
Indiana
(c.1836 or thereabouts) where he owned a stone quarry. His brother,
David
Carithers, who married Elizabeth Phillips,, moved to Vigo County,
Indiana, and his
sister, Susanna, who married Ancil Bright moved to Cass/Carroll County
(?),
Indiana. I believe they all moved at approximately the same time to
Indiana, His
brother, John Carithers married Joanna Roberts and he was reportedly a
bootmaker in Gate City
(Scott County) Virginia. There was also a brother, James, who I also
believe
moved to the same general area in Indiana. There were two other
sisters:
Rebecca, who I don't believe ever married and Margaret Jane, who married
Hiram
Gardner, and lived in Abingdon (Washington County), Virginia. I think
there
may have been another brother, William.
I am still searching for the parents of these children. It is a little
like
looking for a needle in a haystack, since there are so many different
spellings of the original "Carruthers." My mother always said that our
family spelled
their name "Carithers" from the time they arrived here from Scotland by
way
of Ireland. Of course, it doesn''t help that we "Northerners" burned
the
courthouses in the NE Tennessee area during the Civil War along with all
the
"natural" fires that destroyed many courthouses due to woodburning
stoves.
Do you know what area of Pennsylvania that the James Carruthers left to
go to
North Carolina?
Thank you for your reply.
Best regards,
Marilyn in Michigan
