Hi All Carruthers & Bangs, et al,
Getting a bit technical here, but perhaps these data could offer insights for someone.
This combination of New England Bangs and NC Carruthers going into a NC, presumably New
Bern, shipping partnership could be of the most genealogical significance. Hope someone
can spot some clues for us all.
Here is a note by Francis Hodges, perhaps the most experienced researcher I know (and
contributed the will, see below):
"Are all the Carrruthers descendants that John Carruthers' children appear to
have been by his first wife, Sarah Jones, and NOT by Abiah Bangs? FRH" (Note:
JCarruthers 1st wife 'Sarah Jones)
(Also, note below the different refs herein to Jonathan Bangs wife Ruth ....
"Jonathan, b. c. Dec, 1698, d.__________,m 1st Ruth Bangs, 2nd Abiah
Carruthers."
"Jonathan had no children from Wife #1 Ruth___." bw)
There is MUCH more in our Carruthers (& Bangs) Archives addressing these issues.

Hi again Ian, et al!
I'll get the interesting CARRUTHERS packet off to you ASAP, but re: Yale
collection - Yale also holds MUCH of the highest interest re the BANGS Surname. So why
tell you?
Here's one good reason:
"Jonathan Bangs and John Carruthers bought land 1738 in New Bern, Craven Co NC
next to each other and both moved in 1739 from Mass to NC. (My judgment is that they were
partners of a sort in a seafaring endeavour out of New Bern NC (bw)"

BTW, are you suggesting we request a copy of the papers rather than a visit to
Yale?! Any idea of the cost. Let me know and I'll ask if members would like to send
you or your designee money - keep in mind there will also be a cost for distribution -
copies and mailing. Might it be more thrifty for 'Yale' or its copying contractor
to send direct to each 'subscriber' !

ANY IDEAS how we can get hold of these doc's in the Yale archives ? apparently
they hold a lot of data on Jack Carruthers,
really need someone to sift through them before purchasing . The photos are pricey so
will also need a look through to see if any contain pic's of Jack.
IDEALY does anyone have a friend that lives in New Haven ??

Wright, Howell: Collection, 1952, 1899-1902 31 485 - 487
Description of the Papers
Correspondence, photographs, clippings, and printed material relating to the
history of Rhodesia and South Africa, with specific focus on Jameson's Raid,
1895-1896, the Johannesburg Reform Committee, and Cecil John Rhodes.
Correspondence includes letters with numerous individuals active in the
government and military forces in South Africa and Rhodesia, and with friends, relatives,
and associates of those individuals. These letters were solicited by Wright and contain
the reminiscences of and comments about such figures as: Frederick R. Burnham, Jack
Carruthers, Louis Cohen, John Hays Hammond, J. B. M. Hertzog, Sir Leander Starr Jameson,
Cecil Rhodes, George Bernhard Shaw, and Jan Christian Smuts.
The Howell Wright Collection is arranged in four series, totaling linear feet:
I. Correspondence, 1886-1954
II. Photographs, 1890-1902
III. Printed Material, 1900-1950
IV. Personal Papers, 1910-1953
Series I, Correspondence, contains the letters and other materials solicited by
Howell Wright to document the history South Africa and Rhodesia, with a particular
emphasis on the role of the British government and military forces in the late nineteenth
century. Wright corresponded with many figures who held governmental and military
positions in the region, and with relatives and associates of these individuals. These
correspondents include men who served in the Pioneer Corps, and who were involved in the
Bachuanaland Expedition, 1884-1888; Jameson's Raid, 1895-1896, and the Johannesburg
Reform Committee.
Many correspondents, including Jack Carruthers, Charles Llewellyn Anderson,
James Donaldson, and Sir Frederick Hamilton, provided lengthy personal reminiscences of
their lives and experiences in South Africa. A variety of printed material, photographs,
and newspaper clippings, often enclosed with these letters, adds another dimension to the
lives of these people.
Series II, Photographs, 1892-1990, is arranged in two sections: Rhodes, Cecil
John; and South Africa. Rhodes, Cecil John, contains two hundred and ninety (290)
photographs of Cecil John Rhodes and the South African region. They are reproductions of
items located in the Central African Archives.
The South Africa section contains photograph albums relating to such events as
the South Africa War, 1899-1902, and the Tercentenary celebration of 1952.
Series III, Printed Material, ca. 1900-1950, contains a variety of publications
collected by Howell Wright. Items include journals and journal articles relating to the
history of South Africa and Rhodesia and publications written by Wright on topics such as
municipal government and city policies.
Series IV, Personal Papers, 1910-1953, contains books, clippings, printed
material, and miscellanea relating to Howell Wright, his family, the development of his
collection of manuscripts and materials relating to South Africa and Rhodesia, and
miscellanea.
Oversize consists of large printed material, documents, and items (including
photostats) collected by Wright on individuals and organizations active in South Africa
and Rhodesia

Hello John Bangs,
I'm Barry Wetherington. Have we talked before? I would be very interested in
the Bangs Line or Tree you mentioned to the Bangs Message board participant (see
msg replicated below), particularly if it sheds light on our Content Bangs +John
Carruthers 1700 - 1752 entry.
I host the Carruthers List (AWA the W'ton Lists). We (on the Bangs &
Carruthers Lists) have had discussions over the last few yrs (although not much
recently) about this issue, w/few resolutions.
Here is what we believe we do know, excerpted from an earlier msg on the
Carruthers-L List:

From Carruthers-L List msg:

Rocksolannah is interesting but not the most important - the more interesting is
Content (Bangs) Carruthers. She is almost certainly Jonathan Bangs's sister
before she (Content) md John Carruthers - the issue is to establish who was
Content's father. This is an important connection for the Carruthers - & to the
New Eng Jonathan Bangs family - Jonathan's father Edwd came over on the 1623
Anne!
To sum up this important early Carruthers likely genealogy - Jonathan Bangs
md Abiah Carruthers & Content Bangs md John Carruthers ie John's sister Abiah
Carruthers md Content's brother Jonathan Bangs & vice-versa.
AND!!!
Jonathan Bangs and John Carruthers bought land 1738 in New Bern, Craven Co NC
next to each other and both moved in 1739 from Mass to NC. (My judgment is that
they were partners of a sort in a seafaring endeavour out of New Bern NC. bw

Hi Anne,
At one point in time, you asked if the Bangs Yale Collection was open to
the public. It is, and I'll copy some info below FYI.
Someone, I don't recall who, also mentioned that the collection was
limited to more recent activities. Below is some indication to the contrary.
I don't imagine you get up to Connecticut often from J'ville, but if you
do, or if anyone gets over there, Best of Luck!

JOHN KENDRICK BANGS (1862-1922)
Hi again all,
There are two articles in "Great Migration Begins" by Robert Charles
Anderson, Immigrants to New England 1620-1633" that deals with the immigrant
Edward Bangs and also with Robert Hicks. If you have access it will spell
out in great detail the early years of these families.
On the Jonathan Bangs, Jr. (who was son of Jonathan Bangs and Mary Mayo) m.
1. Elizabeth and 2. Elizabeth Berry, dtr. of John Berry, I have the
following data accumulated.
The first Elizabeth had
Samuel, b. c. Sept. 1696, d. 22 Dec. 1720, unm.
Jonathan, b. c. Dec, 1698, d.__________,m 1st Ruth Bangs, 2nd Abiah Carruthers.[Here is
suggested - "Jonathan, b. c. Dec, 1698, d.__________,m 1st Ruth Bangs, 2nd Abiah
Carruthers."
"-Jonathan had no children from Wife #1 Ruth___."
