Hi Ian
I don't think there is a Carruthers clan or association.
Arms are matriculated by a person, not a clan. It is common amongst clans
for the crest of the clan chief to be encircled in a belt and buckle and
used a means of showing allegiance to the chief. To find out more about
Scottish Heraldry see the Lord Lyon's website:

Subject: [DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY] Carruthers Chief?
Please could some knowledgeable person assist:
As Carruthers is a family and not a clan would they have a "CHIEF".
Is it true to say the Clan Chief bears the arms that no one else can wear,
however it can be altered with the Chief's approval and worn by other
family offshoots.
many thanks
Ian Carruthers
