Hi Carruthers genealogists:
I enjoyed the message from Virginia about her recent trip to Dumfries. Of all the
Carruthers' stories I've seen so far, none seems to connect with mine from the
same area.
My grandfather was William Carruthers Blacklock (b. Glasgow 9/20/1889). After some
research assistance from the GRO in Edinburgh, I visited Dumfriesshire etc last fall,
including his family's home village of Newton-Wamphray, and the nearby homestead farm,
"Laverhay", built about 1603, and the cottage "Milne". I talked with
the current resident (a Lancastrian, and not a Carruthers). Apparently the last
Carruthers resident left Laverhay about 50 years ago. The parish church has many legible
Carruthers headstones and monuments. These places are all well identified on the Ordnance
Survey Maps.
I took many headstone photos at the churchyards and have info that might be helpful to
Carruthers from that area. Of course I took only the ones that seemed to be a direct
connect in my case. I am happy to share anything that might be helpful - just let me know
your interest. I'm not an experienced genealogist - just interested enough to keep
digging.
