You aren't the first one to advance this 2 Rocksolannahs theory. The 1720 DOB
for Rocksolannah (accepted spelling) is very tentative. Others have used
1705-15. That is one reason we are looking for more, including the Bangs. I want
to spend time in the Craven courthouses/libraries, etc, BUT the Craven
courthouses have burned too often, which is why land records are so impor.
Below, at the bottom, is a long 1998 excerpt of a message, the essence of
which, as I recall, addressed the Rocksolannah issue, including much info. I do
look fwd to the day I can do only Gen in musty libraries. We've made some
progress since then, but no resolution yet. Rock is one of the few things at the
top of my List.
I do love your work - keep it up!

| what do you think of this , In land record deeds in Carven Co NC
| in 1738 William gives his sister Rochlannah the late widow of John
| Martin a tract of land near the mouth of Neuse River. ok now so
| if she were born in 1720 This would have made her 18 and the last
| time John Martin was mention is 1736 in the land deeds. and William
| Rochlannah brother who gave her the land would have been 2 because
| it has him born in 1736. So Is it not a possible that there were two
| Rochlannah and it was the first one that was married to John Martin.

---EXCERPT---
There is, on the Pickel site we have referenced before, a listing for an
Elizabeth Carruth. Could she be
related to Rocksolannah Carruthers? See notes below.
Jean, Would it be worthwhile to look for more Carruthers? Contact Francis
Hodges??? (I got the distinct
feeling he did not want to get very much more deeply involved, altho he has
already done a lot for our interests).
Questions re Hodges/Carruthers/Rocksolannah
1. At one point, there was another note that a "Stanley" may have also married
Rocksolannah,
perhaps predating both Martin and John.
2. Sarah Rice is listed on my Tree as a name of both a sister of, and a daughter
of Rocksolannah
and John Witherington, but the entry is qualified by documentation.
3. Do you have any information concerning the birth or death date of the senior
John Carruthers, the author of the
1751/2 will, or of Rocksolannah? Obviously, as of the time of the 1751/2 will,
John was likely in his 40s or 50s, and
Rocksolannah some 20ish years younger, but I have found nothing more certain.
This would suggest a birth date for
John of about 1700, and then Rocksolannah about 1720ish.
4. Is there a ranking of birth order for John's children by wife Content Unk?
5. AN INVENTORY OF THE GOODS AND CHATTELS OF JOHN CARRUTHERS LATE
OF CRAVEN COUNTY DECEASED TAKEN AUGUST 12TH 1756 BY JOHN STARKEY
ESQUIRE From: Craven County Estate Papers, North Carolina Archives, Raleigh, NC.
Craven
County, to wit John Starkey execr. of the last will of John Caruthers came
personally before me, one of his
majestie's Justices of Peace for the county aforesaid, and made oath in due form
that the within contains a true and
perfect inventory of the goods and chattels of John Caruthers late of Craven
County deceased
6. p 4l - see also Book 8 p 226 - l8 Dec l754 - William Carruthers (or) to
granddaughter Elizabeth Hobbs (under l6)
(ee) if Elizabeth has no heirs then to my daughter Prudence Davis and if she has
no heirs then to my son John
Carruthers - WIT Jos Rew, Jos Black
7. p 226 - WIll of Abiah Bangs - 3 June l755 - cousin Elizabeth Hobbs; daughter
Betty Bangs;
sisters Elizabeth Carruthers, Mary Carruthers; brother john Carruthers
8. p 95 - 20 June l755 - William Carruthers (or) fatherly affection for daughter
Sarah Rew (ee) -
a Negro (Giving Sarah a slave, or Sarah is black?)
9. I (bw) did a thorough search on the general web for Rocksolannah (and
diminutives thereof) and came up with
only (:-o):
"Luckily the guys at Salt Rock, Sola Wetsuits and the Watersports Company (Reef
Brazil) ...."

Dear Mr Hodges;
I feel like a Nut. First I foul up your genealogy line. Then I got your gender
wrong. And I've not thanked you for
your assistance. I appreciate your forbearance. First, I have no proof of and
have deleted Francis Hodges as spouse
of Sarah Rice. It was because of confusion on my part reading Email messages.
Perhaps this web Gen is too easy and
not disciplined enough.
Yes, I did receive your Email of yesterday morning about the Hodges-Witherington
marriage, for which I am
grateful. John Witherington was Rocksolannah's second husband. As you mentioned,
her first was Martin (I have this
note - Beaufort Deeds pg 4 Wm Carruthers gave his sister Rocksolana(sp?) Martin
(widow) 200 acrs certificate
states Rocsolanah(sp?) Martin built and saved lot #80 in 1754). At one point,
there was another note that a "Stanley"
may have also married Rocksolannah, perhaps predating both Martin and John.
Sarah Rice is listed on my Tree as a
name of both a sister of, and a daughter of Rocksolannah and John Witherington,
but the entry is qualified by
documentation.

Francis Hodges' oldest son, and the only one for whom I have
birth and death dates, was Joshua Hodges. He was born in 1736, which
means that John Carruthers was already a grandfather by that year. So I
would suspect that John was born in the 1600's--perhaps as early as
1680's. I have been in touch with two or three Carruthers researchers
but have no scoop on John's origins as of yet. There were families by
that name in both Pennsylvania and Virginia (eastern shore) in early
1700's. The Bangs family, which was related, came from Barnstable,
Massachusetts. Don't know how they came to live in the New Bern area
buy the mid 1700's. I have found both John Carruthers and Francis
Hodges mentioned in the Craven records as early as the 1730's. Wish I
knew where they came from.
I would think that several of John's children may have been born
before the 1720's--perhaps in the very early 1700's. I have estimated
Francis Hodges' birth at 1710.
Back on 11/22, I emailed you and Jean a large file: titled Craven/Lenoir
County/Carruthers/Hodges/Witherington which I had
accumulated web surfing concerning old wills, property transfers, etc. It also
included many Links. Of course,
Francis Hodges sponsored many of the sites, and Martha Mewborn Marble also
contributed to many, so you may
be totally knowledgeable of the content. But the birth and death dates of John
and Rocksolannah would be very
helpful to evaluate how it all fit for me.
We have received helpful information from Etta Hodges. Do you know Etta?
Nope. Where does she live?
Thanks for all the Gen work you and other Hodges have done, which has eased my
search. Also, Good Luck next
week in the archives in Raleigh. I suspect that eventually, I and all of us will
profit from your visit.
Best,
Barry Wetherington (Robert, John, Wm, Peter, John, James Barney, Lawton)
Have you been in touch with Larry Clayton of Salem, SC. He sent me tons
of Carruthers data via snail-mail a year or so ago.
