I am trying to trace a family for someone in NZ and I find that dates are
hard to match up. Would anyone on here have information about Robert Irving
and Janet Carruthers. The confusing think is that there are two sets of
these people born ruffly around the same time. My information is that Robert
Irving born in 1992 married Janet Carruthers born in 1792 I don't know
anything about this Robert but his wifes mother was a Jardine. Who married a
Robert Carruther and her grandmother apparently was a Jardine as well. Does
this make sense?
These Carruthers are descended from Christoper Carruthers 2nd of Dormont.
My family is the other Carruthers. Robert born in 1793 and married to Janet
Carruthers born in 1803. She was a daughter of John Carruthers of Howcleugh
and Janet Schoolar. This family is in the Carruthers book in Dumfries
library. Their son was my Ggrandfather who immigrated to Canada in the
1850's and who married Thomasina Rae. These Carruthers are descended from
Francis Carruthers 3rd of Dormont and son of Christopher.
In the 1851 census I found my family living at Quaas Loaming near Lockerbie.
In the same census I found a Robert Irving and Janet living at Broats farm
but their birth dates are different than the ones I had. Robert born in 1797
and Janet born in 1800
There seems to be some mix up here can anyone straighten this out?
Thanks Margaret

Here's a good link to a drawing of her medical device.
Did she have any children?
What is her birth year?

Hi,
I have just joined this list in the hope that someone may have information
on a Gt.Aunt missing inasmuch I could find nothing about her
after the UK Census 1861. ?It has now come to light that SOPHIA ANN LEE
emigrated to Australia in Feb 1866. ?In 1868 she married RICHARD
HETHERINGTON in Melbourne but the marriage broke up, it is believed, in Fiji
about 1888. ?A little later, I am told she added CARRUTHERS
to her name because husband Richard had inherited from his mother LOUISA
CARRUTHERS. ?Sophia, therefore, then became Sophia Hetherington
Carruthers.
We next hear she has invented, ?in 1893, an electrical machine to aid
nervous aches and pains (briefly that is what it did) ?She successfully had
it Patented and exhibited it at the Chicago Trade Fair that year. ?After
that the trail goes cold and nothing further can be found about her.
If anyone has information it would be most welcome

I think the medical device is a good idea.
The only one I know is the T.E.N.S. it is in use to this day.

Hi Margaret,
I must say that your Janet Carruthers b1792 is very long lived to have
married Robert Irving in 1992!!! Ha! Ha!
However have you looked at any wills? Either Irving, Jardine, Or Carruthers
for that period?
Judy
