Subject: Re: [NCCraven] Witherington/Carruthers - 1750's
Trish, thank you so much for this! Rocksalanah's sister, Sarah
Carruthers, married a RICE who, as the name would indicate, probably also
came from the Calvert Co., Maryland area.
I descend from this Carruthers family through John's daughter, Frances
Carruthers who married Francis Hodges. Other's research indicates that John
Carruthers may have come from the Cumberland area of PA to Craven Co., NC
around or before the 1730's. That fits in the time frame for the travel to
NC of the Witheringtons and Rices from Maryland.
For some time I have been trying to determine the geographic origins of
Francis Hodges and have been looking at coastal Virginia. Maybe I should
look further north for his family also??!!
Thanks again.

| Kathy,
|
| John Witherington, who married the widow Rocksalanah Carruthers Martin,
| was a son of Robert Widdrington (or Witherington) of Calvert County,
| Maryland. By 1730 John Witherington and his brother Solomon
| Witherington had left Calvert County, Maryland and were in Craven
| County, North Carolina.
|
| In the following abstracts there are several surnames from Calvert
| County, Maryland which later appear in Craven County, NC.
|
| SOURCE: The Maryland Calendar of Wills, Volume V, 1720-1726, by Cotton
| & Henry, page 124:
| DOCUMENT: Will of ROBERT WIDDRINGTON of Christ's Church Parish,
| planter, Calvert County, Maryland. Written 20 August 1722, probated 10
| November 1722:
| --Sons: SOLOMON and JOHN at age of 19 (when reaching adulthood)
| --Daughter: DORCAS "in care of Mr. WALTER SMITH of St. Leonards"
| --Daughter: MARY "in care of her Aunt Mrs. MARY DARE"
| --Daughter: ELIZABETH, wife of HENRY EASTERLING
| Also mentions BENJAMIN RICE. Appointed HENRY EASTERLING as guardian of
| sons SOLOMON and JOHN. Witnessed by JOHN DICKINSON, WILLIAM RUTLEDGE
| and HENRY CONSTABLE.
|
| COMMENTS (by Timothy Kearney, researcher):
| "This is excellent! and takes place at a perfect time. SOLOMON and
| JOHN were underage. By 1730-32, they had reached adulthood and of
| course, moved to Craven County, NC. Please note that Calvert County
| was on the eastern shore in the Chesapeake Bay, and would be quite
| accessible to the North Carolina seaport New Bern by ocean travel. A
| relatively short distance away."
| "The spelling of WIDDRINGTON is pretty bad, but I found evidence that
| this ROBERT was indeed a WITHERINGTON, located in one of the few
| Calvert County records that survived, as follows:
| SOURCE: Calvert County, Maryland Rent Rolls 1651-1776, by T.L.C.
| Genealogy, page 13: "HOOPER'S CLIFTS": 1000. 1..0.0 Surveyed 26 May
| 1652 for HENRY HOOPER on the west side of Chesapeake Bay adjoining to
| the land called Hodgkins Clifts. Possessors: 675 acres - NATHANIEL
| DARE, 325 acres - ELIZABETH RICE.
| --NATHANIEL DARE from ROBERT WITHERINGTON & Wife, 9 Sept. 1720.
| --GIDEON DARE from BENJAMIN RICE 28 June 1729.
| --NATHANIEL DARE from GIDEON DARE 20 April 1736."
| COMMENTS (by Timothy Kearney, researcher):
| "This is indeed the same man. BENJAMIN RICE was mentioned in his Will.
| The DARES obviously connect as well, since ROBERT's daughter MARY was
| in the care of "her Aunt" MRS. MARY DARE. MARY DARE may have been
| ROBERT's sister or sister-in-law. Very hard to determine. At least
| one daughter, ELIZABETH, was married, suggesting the others were not
| infants. It is unfortunate that the document does not name ROBERT's
| wife, who apparently died between 1720 and 1722, since she was not
| named in the Will."
|
| • John Witherington ... was witness to a deed on November 6, 1730, in
| which John Carruthers of the Precinct of Craven bought 300 acres on the
| south side of Neuse River (Craven DB 1, p. 214 ).
|
| • John Witherington is mentioned in John Carruthers will as a
| son-in-law. He married Rocksalanah Carruthers Martin, widow of John
| Martin."
|
| • "Sol [Solomon] Wetherington was among the purchasers of the
| 'perishable Estate' of Francis Hawks at his plantation on Bachelor's
| Creek on January 19, 1732 (Rice, Hassell, Hawks, and Carruthers
| Families of North Carolina, p. 57)
| As this record shows, Solomon Witherington was in Craven County as
| early as John, and was probably his brother."
|
| • "On May 29, 1733, Solomon Witherington bought 150 acres on the south
| side of Bay River which was a part of 1,220 acres patented by Neal
| O'Neal (DB 2). John Brooks, Joseph Pleger, and Benjamin were
| witnesses."
|
| • "On Dec. 17, 1736, Solomon Witherington sold the 150 acres on the
| south of Bay River to John Martin. Francis Delamar and Benjamin Rice
| were witnesses."
|
| • "On Sept. 22, 1742, John Carruthers sold 150 acres on the north side
| of Neuse River and upper side of Stoney Town Creek to Francis Stringer
| for 300 pounds current money. The land adjoined that of Solomon
| Witherington and John Witherington."
|
| • Craven County, NC - DB 1-124, 22 Sep 1742.
| John CARRUTHERS planter to capt. Francis STRINGER, £300, 150 acres,
| being part of survey granted to said John CARRUTHERS by his Majesty
| 1738, lying on north side of Neuse river & the upper side of Stoney
| Town Creek beginning at a white oak near the mouth of said creek & runs
| S35W up the river pecon(?) 336 pole to a pine then S80W to a great pond
| which parts him from Solomon WITHERINGTON’s land then along Solomon
| WITHERINGTON’s & John WITHERINGTON’s to a Cyprus at the creek then down
