Hello Carruthers Group,
Recently, I finished reading an autobiography of a John Bates (June 18, 1821-?) son of
Dennis Bates and Jane Carruthers (b: April 11, 1813 in Langholm, Scotland) who was sister
to Peter Cameron Carruthers (b: 1822 in Bath, NY). This book was sent to me by my third or
fourth cousin. In the autobiography, John Bates relates the following family
information:
"My mother was born in Scotland, and she was brought to this country when she was
about seven years of age. Her father came from Scotland as a mill expert, but in 1842 left
the mill business, bought a farm in Steuben County, N.Y. and became a farmer. A few years
later he sold his farms and bought a larger one in Michigan, remaining a farmer until his
death.
My grandmother's father was an architect. He designed the plans for Langham Castle,
Scotland, and the building was erected under his superintendence. My grandmother often
spoke of the visits she made to the castle, when as a little girl she accompanied her
father there."
I am interested in learning if any of you have a connection to this line or information
about the Carruthers mentioned above.
The book also relates, in a most delightfully readable manner, his adventures in
California prior to the Gold Rush and in Australia and New Zealand.
Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Kelley (Carruthers) Buttrick
