[Note: Bradford Gatlin died in 1865 in the Yellow Fever epidemic in New
Bern.
Because this was during the Civil War, and the Yellow Fever epidemic caused
3,000 deaths in New Bern alone, all estate records and other local records
were very scanty].

This indenture made this 27 day of December in the year Eighteen hundred and
seventy seven between Oliver D. Lewis and Louisa his wife of the county of
Pamlico and State of North Carolina of the first part and Bradford Gatlin of
the County and state aforesaid of the second part; Witnesseth; that the said
parties of the first part, for and in consideration of the sum of seven
hundred dollars the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged has given
granted bargained sold and conveyed and does hereby give grant bargain sell
and convey to the said party of second part his heirs and assigns a
certain piece or parcel of land lying in the county of Pamlico and State
aforesaid on
the head of Alligator Creek bounded as follows. Beginning at James H.
Gaskins Northeast
Corner and Runs.N61 1/4 W 40 pole to John H. Nichols line then with said
line S24 1/2
W. 100 pole then S 61 1/4 E 40 pole to John S. Brabble¹s then with said line
S 61 1/4
E 40 James H. Gaskins line then with said line N 25 W 100 pole to the
beginning
containing 25 acres.. To have and to hold the same with the appurtances
thereunto
belonging to Bradford Gatlin the said party of the second part his heirs and

covenant and agree to warrant and defend the premises aforesaid to the said
