Subject: [Witherington] Re: Janet Withrington
Hi All,
Just a couple comments. Dumfries, Scotland is a hotbed of Carruthers and
Carruthers hooked up w/Witheringtons/ Widdringtons. In fact, there is a
Border Reiver dna project ongoing - to track down the Carruthers/
Widdrington/ (more) lines.

Dear Debbie, Just looked at the Witheringtons again. My Janet lived in
Sanquhar, Dumfries, Scotland and I am descended from her son James Abbot
Hamilton born 13 May 1770. She was married to Robert Hamilton but I do not
have dates for Janet or Robert. The Hamiltons owned land in Buckinghamshire
as well as Dumfries and were related to the Whighams in Sanquhar.
My address is new; 4275 Owens Road, Apt. 136, Evans, GA 30809-3316
and my
email is now <dojens(a)comcast.net>

Dear Barry, Thank you so much for answering my inquiry. Janet was my G4
grandmother. She had a daughter and three sons, the youngest being James
Abbot Hamilton. I spent a number of hours going through Widdringtons in
Northumberland and seemed to discover that there was a confusing link as the
husband of a neice took that name in order to keep the property. I will have
to go back to old files to see what I can find. On the drop line pedigree
from a great grandfather it said that Janet's ancestor was from the poem
about "Chevy Chase", actually the Battle of Otterbunr in 1388 in which
"brave Witherington"'s legs were cut off and he continued fighting on the
stumps! Sounds like a good gene pool. I did find a girl in a Genalogy
Elderhostel from Canada that had Widdringtons in her family and was born in
Northumberland but she did not answer any of my letters. I think Janet's
father was Edward but I am not sure. Her first child was born in 1758 so she
should have been born about 1738. In a book about "Border Ballads by John
Marsden there is a good explanation of the Battle of Otterburn but not the
poem of Chevy Chase. Guess I gave up and worked on other lines. Hope we can
connect. My address in 1220 Wild Azalea Point, Seneca, SC 29672-9194 if you
need to snail mail anything. I would really like to find her background. DAJ
