| Jury case of Administration of the Estate of James PATTON against Pan Handle
Rail Road, for the killing of James PATTON at Scio on 25th of September last
brought in the verdict last Thursday morning of $2,500. damages.

| On March 20th 1881 by Rev. L. T. DAVIDSON, at his mother's residence, James
GREEN, son of the late Samuel GREEN and Miss Clara M. NELSON, both of Harrison
county.
|
| Mrs. Jacob HENSS, one of the oldest citizens in Nottingham township, died
Wednesday morning. She was 70 years of age and born in Germany.
|
| George BAKER, age 75, of Beallsville, was taken suddenly ill of heart disease
Thursday night and in a few hours was a corpse.
|
| Elmer BARGER has become a citizen of Nottingham township, he moved onto the
farm formerly owned by William ROWLAND.
|
| Mrs. Lemuel MALLERNEE died on the 18th last, she was ill with brain fever.
Her remains were interred in Deersville cemetery.
|
| Barrett ROGERS has moved to a new home on Reo Eyo Plains, he contemplates
doing large business in the way of farming.
|
| Nottingham township has two candidates for County Treasurer, Mr. Samuel MOORE
and Mr. Smith HINES.
|
| Johnson CARROTHERS left last Monday for Ada, Ohio to attend Normal School.
|
| Proff. H. O. RUSSELl was married last Saturday in Uhrichsville to Mrs. Mary
RUSSELL.
|
| Hopwood : Martin SIMPSON will attend college at New Athens.
|
| We are sorry to say that the promising young men Vincent DICKERSON, Joseph
LAFFERTY and W. R. OGLEVEE start west to seek their fortune. We wish the boys
great success.

| West Chester : We are informed William MOORE and family moved to Dennison.
|
| Miss Maggie RALSTON, estimable young lady, died of consumption at her home in
Antrim the evening of the 25th of April.
|
| Friend Edward CARPENTER, now of Cambridge, we are sorry to learn is in poor
health. His age of 79 years being much against his recovery.
|
| Matrimonial fever rages in Flushing for several days, the latest cases are
William D. SLATER and Miss Cassie SHONNON, surely winter and spring must
embrace, the bridegroom is 44, the bride 18. Also C. R. SAUBORN and Miss Laura
A. KIRK were smitten with the same fever, to get rid of it went to Canal Dover
where made one flesh.

| Nathan DRYDEN has moved from the farm near Londonderry to beyond West Chester.

| On the second day of May A.D. 1881 said Justice issued Order of Attachment in
the above action for sum of $200. with 6% interest from January 1, 1881. Amount
of claim and $50. probable costs.
| Said case set for hearing on 25 June 1881 at 9 a.m. before J. ROMANS J.P. of
Freeport

| Dr. W. H. McCOLLOUGH prepares to start for Tenn. If successful finding a
suitable place plans to locate permanently. He wants to go where the keen
blasts of winter are not so cutting.

| The old building owned by John GREEN on Main Street is being torn down. This
building now in ruins was erected over 50 years ago by Barney McNAMEE for a
pottery. Thomas JENKINS was running pottery in the same building when John
GREEN came to Freeport. Relects of Old Freeport are being torn down to make
room for substancial growth and new life for our village.

| Joseph BERRY is the oldest inhabitant in Wheeling township, Guernsey County,
at 115.
|
| Col. John McNUTT of the U.S. Army has died in Paris a short time since. He
was born and raised in Cadiz. Democrat.
|
| Israel and Edward CLENDENING started last week for Kansas and Indian Territory
to herd cattle.
|
| Mrs. Martha McCALL and daughter, Mrs. Otho SHIPLEY started Tuesday of last
week for Iowa and Illinois for a month visit with relatives.

| The rope jumping manis has reached Mt. Gilead, where a schoolgirl, Alice
BROWN, died from the effects of violent exercise.
|
| The name of the girl who shot Sammy HAVENAR near Bowerston was Jane DAYHUFF.
She first snapped the pistol at Mrs. JOHNSON the lady with whom she was living,
who upbraided her for so doing, when she turned and snapped it at the little
boy, the revolver discharged, the boy fell and expired a few minutes later. A
Coroner's inquest held , the jury returned a verdict of " death by accident,
pistol shot inflicted by Jane DAYHUFF."

| Miss Martha MILLER sold 7 1/2 acres near the Tunnel between Freeport and
Tippecanoe to William CARD of Pittsburg and Robert HOSIE of Brooke county, WV
for $100. per acre. They hope to quarry stone for bridge building purposes.

| Miss Lidie HOTZ of Deersville connected herself to Miss Manda STEEL in the
mantua making business.
|
| Mr. Harmon HARRIS whom we reported ill a few weeks ago died last Thursday
morning. He was born August 9, 1805, hence he was nearly 76 years old. Burial
was Friday at 1 o'clock.

| Mr. and Mrs. Thomas BOYER of Washington township, left last week for Kansas to
improve the farm that they own there.
|
| Tippecanoe : T. L. JONES in company with more of our boys start today for
Cheyenne.
|
| Mr. George CHRISTY has taken on Elisha PETTY in as partner in the buying and
selling of stock.
|
| Dr. COBB of New Athens expelled 25 feet of tape worm from his two year son by
molasses and pumpkin seed tea.

| O. H. BARLETT, prop., of the Grand Central Hotel is beautifying the grounds by
setting out trees.
| Mr. E. D. CLENDENING and Mrs. Alice HAYS and son arrived at the Grand Central
Hotel on Friday. Mr. CLENDENING will remain for a short time then go south to
receive a herd of cattle whence he has coming up the trail. They are looking
for a ranch to winter the cattle on. Mr. HAYS is a son-in-law of Mr. BARLETT
the prop of the hotel and expects to make Ellsworth his future home.

| The six year old son of John DUGAN, who resides a few miles west of Freeport,
has died of brain infection.
|
| S. D. FORD has purchased the property on the corner of High and Ohio Streets,
where the Press office first located, from D. R. BALLY. He will build on the
site on the old brick building sometime this year.

| E. R. CARSON and J. C. RAMSEY started for Tennessee on the 18th.
|
| Mr. George WILLICE died on the 6th of lung disease, one of the oldest and best
citizens of Washington township, Guernesy county.

| Albert COX brought hame a new bride, Viola LYON of Martin county on the 29th
of April.
