HAEL was one of the great Princes of North Wales and Strathclyde, although he lived in the
Dark Ages much is known about him, because there are many references of him in Welsh
poetry. He is also mentioned and his genealogy given by NENNIUS. He was the son of
Tudwal TUDCLUD (Fascinating family tree & history lesson at the same time), King of
Cumbria and legend traces his ancestors back to MAXIMUS, King of Britain 383-8. He was of
Irish extraction. Ruther's surname, Hael, denotes "Liberal" referring to
his understanding and generous character. Strathclyde was assailed by Saxons, Danes and
Norsemen and these undoubtedly effected settlements, as is witnessed by place-names such
as Denby, Middlebie, Mouswald, etc. At a later date, Anglo-Norman Barons and Knights
were, as elsewhere, granted lands in this district. Surnames came into gradual use in
Scotland during the 12th and 13th Centuries, The most prevalent DNA haplotype group for

The above text is not my research and therefore I do not assume credit for it - As a
matter of interest I did
digitalize the Hael ancestors & they (with a pinch of salt) include notables like COEL
Hen (Old King Cole), the supposed King ARTHUR, Scots Kings (ALPIN), Constantine the Great,
BELLINOS (Beli Mawr), Joseph of Arimathea (St JAMES) and many others. Interesting to see
how these historic folk (supposedly) interconnect - Were they actually related to us, we
obviously cannot be sure. DNA advancement in the decades to come will no doubt have an
important roll to play in narrowing our assumptions or dispelling our theories.
Keep scratching
