Ian, [Your msg has, because of its importance, prompted me to copy to all my
Lists]
A GedCom can be easily opened by any Fam History program, including free
ones, which are avail online; 2 of the best (excellent ones) of which are:
http://www.familysearch.org/
http://www.ldscatalog.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catal...
& (my choice)
http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/columns/eastman/5400.asp
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadLegacy.asp
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/
and there are more free ones avail.
Generally, look to 'Export' from the donor program to another. For ex,
in my FTM, simply go to the first listing at the top 'FILE', click it, and
click on 'Copy/Export. . .', & follow instructions. I've done it many
times.
I do recommend, just for confidence, open into a new Tree (Name it Carru02
to gain confidence), then import to your main program.
Also, perhaps this is the right time to bakup/ copy your Fam Tree data
file (this will probably be located on your computer where your Gen program
is located, such as in C: drive (go to Windows Explorer or 'My Computer,'),
to 'Program files', and in the same location as your program file,
(something like FTW.exe), find the database, to at least one other place to
store as a backup - to some floppies if your data file is small, or burn it
to a cd (make some spares while at it - to give to your family - data is
priceless). In fact, sending your fam tre GedCom to someone else is itself a
backup!!! Also, sending your Tree to the RootsWeb Lists is also a permanent
Bakup. Most programs have a near painless methhod for Bakup.BUT a bacup to
the same location is near worthless - best is off site or a 2d hard drive,
or external.
