HEADQUARTERS,
Graham's Plantation, August 21, 1862-7:30 a. m.
SIR: I have just received reports from Piuckney Island that the com-
pany posted on the eastern end of the island were surprised this morn-
ing by apparently three companies of the rebels. The lieutenant in
command was taken prisoner and about 40 men. One sergeant and 5
privates escaped, an~ are reported on their way to these headquarters.
They report the rebels at 6 o'clock this morning on the island in some
force and wearing a blue uniform similar to our own. Ii have notified
all my officers to have all their commands in readiness to move on to
Pinckney Island. As you have been notified from Seabrook, I wait
further orders, thinking you may think proper to send a gunboat to
cut off the retreat of the rebels.
Yours, with respect,
JOHN H. JACKSON,
Lieutenant- Colonel, Commanding
HENRY W. CARRUTHERS,
Post Adjutant.

XLVII.] EXPEDITION TO WOODSTOCK, ETC., FLA. 359
FEBRUARY 10, 1864.-Capture of Camp Cooper, Fla.
Report of 3faj. Galusha Pennypacicer, Ninety-seventh Pennsylvania Infantry.
FERNANDINA, FLA., February 11, 1864.
....
I would make especial mention of Adjt. Henry W. Carruthers for the valuable
assistance he rendered me throughout. I am greatly indebted to my guides for the
manner in which they discharged their duty in a very dark night. They all
(especially Mr. Grissom) appeared perfectly familiar with the country, and their
assistance was indispensable. Prince and Charles were the colored guides. Had
the expedition been undertaken at an earlier day, I conceive that under the same
circumstances it would have been a
perfect success.
Submitting the foregoing for your information, I have the honor to be, colonel,
very respectfully, your obedient servant,
G. PENNYPACKER,
Major Ninety-seventh Pennsylvania Vols., Comdg.

Shortly after, information having been received that the enemy
had occupied Berryville, some 10 miles northeast of Winchester, and
were advancing from that place, the regiment was withdrawn from
the Front Royal road, and thrown into the rifle-pits commanding the
approaches from Berryville.
It remained here without the occurrence of anything important
until 1 a. m. of the 14th, when it was ordered to the defenses imme-
diately in shelter of the main fort, where it rested until daylight. It
then proceeded to the southern portion of the city, to the defense of
some quartermaster's and commissary property which was in process
of removal, and which was rendered insecure by the somewhat de-
fenseless condition of the city in that quarter. Some of the com-
panies skirmished for a short time with small parties of rebels who
had penetrated the outskirts of the place, but the whole command
was again ordered to the defenses on the northwest, commanding the
Berryville road, in which direction the lines of the enemy could now
be discovered. Severe firing shortly ensued, which lasted for several
hours. The rebels took possession of a large house within rifle dis-
tance of the regiment, and annoyed it severely, delivering their fire
whenever a head showed itself above the rifle-pits. It was resolved
to dislodge them, and a 24-pounder brass howitzer was procured from
the fort and turned upon the building. The gun was served by Cap-
tain [Isaiah B.] McDonald, of the commissary department. After
the firing of several shots, some of which penetrated it, a portion of
the regiment, Companies F and H, under Captain Bowen, of the
latter company, charged, and captured 8 prisoners, the rest making
their escape.
In this affair, Private Charles Baldwin, Company F, while attempting to
capture
2 rebels, was killed, and First Sergt. William Carruthers, Company II, severely
wounded.
I have the honor to be, yours, with respect,
WALTEII C. WHITAKER,

LIFE OF EDMOND MALONE.
From The Athennum.
Life of Edmond 1[fcdone, Editor of Shah-
speare, with Selections from his Manu-
SCVi])t Anecdotes. By Sir James Prior.
Smith, Elder, & Co.
From this heap of gossip on men and
books we shall borrow somewhat largely.
Many of the facts set down by Malone as
the news of his day-the sly, secret history
of his times-are now the common property
of the world. Much that is told of Pope, of
Burke, of Johnson, has been gathered in from
other quarters by the tribe of biographers.
Yet a good deal remains with a certain fresh-
ness and character upon it. Even those pas-
sages, of which the substance is already to
be found in Mr. Croker's "Boswell," or in
Mr. Carruthers' "Pope," have often an in-
terest of their own, either as proving the
general soundness of Malone's information,
or for some slight incidental touch of man-
ner, which adds, if not a fact, a sort of per-
fume, to the tale.
