Does anyone know of a connection between the Witherington, Carruthers and Tingle
family in Maryland? Hugh Tingle, Sr., from England to Maryland in 1668 at age 14. He died
in Somerset Co., MD. At least one son, Hugh, Jr.,
and his sons, Hugh III, James, Joseph, Jacob and Gideon immigrated to Beaufort and Craven
Counties, NC around 1750. Those who moved to Beaufort County originally all moved into
Craven Co. within a few years. In Maryland,
they had lived in "Baltimore Hundred" which was originally Somerset Co., MD,
then Worcester Co., MD and became Sussex Co., DE after the "Mason-Dixon Line"
was established. It is thought these Tingles moved to NC due to the land dispute which
eventually resulted in that decision.
The reason I ask about a possible connection between the Tingles and
Witheringtons/Carruthers is that Hugh Tingle III's widow, Mary Tingle, wrote her will
20 Jan 1767 in Craven Co., NC. As Executors she named two sons and friend, JOHN
CARRUTHERS. Her will was witnessed by JOHN CARRUTHERS, John Bryan and PATTY CARRUTHERS.
Does anyone know if this John Carruthers was the brother of Rocksallanah Carruthers, b.
Abt 1720, who married John Witherington, b. Abt 1703, and immigrated from Maryland to
Craven Co., NC? Thanks.
