Hello all!
This is the first in a set of two e-mails that I am going to send regarding JOHN
CARRUTHERS lots in old New Bern on Pollock St.
Here's what I'm trying to figure out & I'm hoping some of you more
experienced folks might already have the answer:
How is it that the land that John CARRUTHERS leaves to his daughter, Rocksolannah
CARRUTHERS WITHERINGTON is "Lot 98" and joining "Eding (Eden) and Pollock
Streets".
At first, it made perfect sense that there would be a lot at that corner that would have
been his. I had just been trying to figure out which corner. Well... a couple of days ago
I went down to the RoD to obtain a copy of the grant where he got "Lot 98"
because I was hoping it would give me a better description.
Lo and behold the description of the land where "Lot 98" is doesn't seem to
have anything to do with Eden Street!
So that begs the question, did he have another lot on the corner of Pollock & Eden
that had a number OTHER than 98 or were the streets laid out differently then.
The only plan of New Bern map that I can find at present is on the Kellenberger Room site
and I'm going to attach an image that I've cropped out that details where his lots
were located. The problem is, the map is dated 1817.
At first I thought the streets may have been different then than they are now and that
could explain it, but it looks like the streets are the same now as they were in 1817--
and I assume 75 years prior.
So... the next e-mail will include the following:
1) Text of John Carruthers 1742 grant to 4 lots in Newbern town. (95, 96, 97, 98)
2) A map, modified by myself, indicating a) where the 4 lots are, b) where Tryon Palace is
today, c) where the streets in question are.
Here we go...
