Why are you apologizing? For What? Laney IS the diminutive of
Rocksolannah! And I have little to NO doubt that 'Laney' of the Prayer
book/ Bible was named after Rock. And we encourage thoughtful assumptions,
helping us all to think. Did someone suggest you not contribute? We have too
many who just lurk w/o contributing, altho lucky for us you guys and others
like you do work for us all. And who has all the right answers anyhow?
Insights can come from any info, even 'wrong' info.
Welcome & please continue to both think & grace our pages Glen & Karen

PS: Glen, I still have your manuscript. Need it? or did you retain a copy.

Subject: Stephen & Daniel as sons of John & Rocksolannah
Hello:
We would first like to apologize if anything we have said has led
anyone to believe that we found some reference to Rocksolannah being called
"Laney". The only thing we can recall saying that might have been
misconstrued was this 2-02-05 quote from a message we sent to Barry & Jean:
"Both Stephen & John's son William, named their daughters 'Laney',
we
believe after Rocksolannah."
If we have said more than that to anyone, we apologize, but don't
recall having said more to anyone. To us, "Laney" would be a logical
namesake to give a child either as a sort of "nickname" for Rocksolannah,
or to honor her memory by naming a grandchild "Laney", as William & Stephen
seem to have done. This idea also occurred to W. Ray Walker (a descendent
of Stephen's daughter Ann) as mentioned in his message to us dated 1-5-03.
As an added note on Stephen being a son of John, we note that Jean, in
a message (or perhaps a posting) dated 12-14-00, mentions the 1790 Dobbs Cty
census as including "Stephen s/o John Witherington". He appears to have
been called Stephen Withrington in the census, but the quotation is from her
info. Barry, you put that quote & others into a message you sent to the
Weth-L and With-L lists on 11-21-2003 addressed to Doug, me & Regina under
the subject "Wetherington Stephen d1782 Suthey 1775-1868".
As a further clarification of our data, it might be worthwhile to
recall the names (as Karen & I show them) for Stephen's children:
Nathan (abt 1773-1810) married Elizabeth Fish 2-2-1793.
John (abt 1774-?)
Southey R., Sr. (10-22-1775 to1868) married Mary "Polly" Anderson 6-12-1810
& Mary "Polly" Prescott 2-16-1827
Ann (abt. 1782-?) married Nathaniel Peters
Halley (Allice) (3-26-1785 to ?) married Ebenezer Fife on 10-18-1804. She
is listed in one of the Bibles as Allice and is shown in court papers (at
the sale of her Father's goods) as Ally and in the 1807 court papers as
having her name begin with the letter "H"
Laney (born bet 1785 - 1799, died ?)
Elizabeth "Betsy" (born bet 1790-1800, died ?) married Abraham Yates
6-5-1810
Sharp, sometimes mistakenly read as Mary (born bet 1790-1800, died?).
Court papers of 1807 state that he was a "minor by Elijah Hutchins,
his guardian".
Again, sorry if we inadvertently misled anyone about Rocksolannah's
name. To us, Laney would be a logical namesake for a child named after her.
Before closing, we want to restate, as we did in our message of 2-2-05
to Barry & Jean, our choice of John as Stephen's Father is a purely
arbitrary choice on our part and is not something for which we have proof,
nor are we suggesting that others should make the same choice. We chose
based on some of the information here and from other sources elsewhere.
For us, now, this makes sense. If we find info to the contrary tomorrow,
we will make appropriate changes. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have
any questions. Warm regards,
Glen & Karen Wetherington
