Have found in same papers that Elizabeth Hobbs , mother was Prudence Hobbs no father listed.
and March 1770 court a marriage settlement from Alexander Stewart to James Davis Equire.
On Elizabeth Hobbs was proved in open court by Thomas Haslen, and at the September 1772
Court, a Deed from Alexander Stewart, Elizabeth Stewart, formerly Elizabeth Hobbs, Mary York.
formerly Mary Carruthers, and John Carruthers to John Hawks for Lot No. 91 in Newbern was
proved by James Davis, Equire.
Note: I have a land deed record - May 19th 1733-34 William Carruthers of Bath Co, Beaufort
precinct, sells 150 acres for 75lbs. Please correct me if this wrong, I do have several more
that list a Bath co. There is also a mention of Sarah Rew- Bond and identifying William Carruthers
as her father. in her will of 1796 it named John carothers as her brother and Clayton, Joseph, John JR
Alexander, and Thomas w. York Sr. as her nephew's. Aliah Bangs in her will of 1755 leaves here Cousin
(niece). Elizabeth Hobbs a lot in New Bern and the rest of the Estate to her daughter Betty Bangs
and if Betty were to die it would go to her sisters Elizabeth and Mary ( Just wonder how old Betty was
at this time) William Carruthers ( her brother) was named Executor, but John Carrruthers finished
the administration of the will. ( so what happen to William) .
Also received a note from a Tyre Elizabeth Carithers, TN. That has trace the family back to
John the 5th Lord of Holmains
* Note have tried to scan and send not working so made copies snail-mail today to Barry

Hi Larry
I am Barry Wetherington, closely associated with the early NC Carruthers
family history. Francis Hodges sent me this msg (3 pars of which quoted
below) a few years ago, and I failed to follow it up.
First, are you this Larry Clayton of Salem, SC? If so, I host the
RootsWeb Carruthers-L List, :
(Archives) http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/c/carruthers.html
which recently has been rather active concerning John & Rocksolannah
Carruthers, and I am belatedly doing now what I should have yrs ago. Is this
a family in which you were, or are, active?
If so, is there any way our Carruthers List could arrange to view your
Carruthers genealogical data? If you say yes, I'll send you a check to cover
costs, and arrange a visit to you to review and copy. I've also asked
Francis for his assistance. Are you still at:
Larry Clayton, 1906 SE 8th St., Ocala, FL 34471?
Thats not too far from Leesburg, where, many years ago, I used to
attend MYF summer camp. BTW, have you ever worked with Jean Witherington of
St Cloud, FL? My father was born on the banks of the Suwanee River, in
Jasper FL.
I would be grateful if you could reply, or call.
Barry Wetherington
PS: I also note you have an excellent Boyd database:

My maternal side md into the Boyds in the Fostoria OH area. I believe
they still have a Boyd reunion there, usually in Nov I believe.

Bill Moore, FYI. Barry
"BOYD, LEECH complicated by third surname MOORE"
"The relationship between BOYD and LEECH is complicated by a third surname
which the two have in common, namely MOORE. Study of the Leech family
history suggests they had a close, likely familial connection with the
Moores in York Co. SC: they exchanged property on Fishing Creek in the 18th
century and others of both families were buried together in Bethel
Presbyterian Cemetery in southwestern York.
"Around 1750 Walter Moore lived on Pennypack Cr., two miles from White Marsh
Church and 15 miles from Philadelphia. One of his daughters, Elizabeth,
married a Leech (unfortunately I haven't been able to determine her father's
first name). Another daughter, Sarah, married Rev. John Cuthbertson, pastor
of Octoraro Presbyterian Church (which appears to be the church that Rev.
Adam Boyd had served, perhaps a bit earlier). " . . . . .

would like to know your thoughts on this, have received family sheets and on one it has a William Carruthers

If anyone would like for me to send a cropped image of the column that contains six of the seven Witheringtons living in Dobbs Co in 1790, just e-mail me.
I'd send it to the list, but the file is about 159kb and that's after I've cropped it down from the full page image. If anyone has dial-up I don't want to create a problem with downloading the image.
I purchased a wonderful book recently from the Tryon Palace shop. It's titled A HISTORY OF NEW BERN AND CRAVEN COUNTY by Alan D. Watson.
It has several references to John Carruthers.
Did you know that...
- John Carruthers was a proprietor of a tavern or ordinary in Craven County (possibly in New Bern, itself) sometime between the years of 1741 and 1760. (Note: I can't be certain that this is John Carruthers Sr, as it only gives a date range and does not specify whether it is father or son. There are other entries in the book about John Jr.. I do suspect it was the father, though. He was certainly a man on the scene back in those days.)
- Around 1744, John Carruthers was removed from his position of Justice of the Peace in a controversial case involving lawyer Richard Lovett -- who had apparently whined to the royal council about several county magistrates dismissing certain cases before he had a chance to try them. The entry from the book reads as follows:
"... The Craven justices failed to satisfy all within their purview. Lawyer Richard Lovett complained to the royal council in 1744 that the county magistrates had dismissed several of the cases in which he was legal counsel, though he had a conflicting engagement in the provincial circuit court, had unsuccessfully attempted to find a substitute, and had notified the court of his impending absensce and sought a postponement of his suits. The Craven court remained unimpressed. Vindicating Lovett, the council decided that justices John Powell, John Bryan, and John Carruthers "had acted with great Partiality" and so, struck their names from the county commission of the peace." (Watson, 35)
- At some point prior to 1752, John Carruthers served as a New Bern representative to the legislature. Apparently, back in those days the older counties (Currituck, Perquimans, Pasquotank, Chowan, Tyrell & Bertie) sent five representatives apiece to the lower house of the legislature while the newer counties only were allowed 2 apiece. Craven County was granted the special privelege of a "borough representative" from the town of New Bern. This was the position that John Carruthers held for one term.
It goes on to say, "Craven assemblymen failed to play a major role in the deliberations of the lower house of the legislature during the first half of the eighteenth century. George Roberts served with distinction in the sessions of 1735 and 1740. Noteworth, also, were John Carruthers and Francis Stringer, who shared committee assignments in 1747 and 1749 in settling public accounts and revising the laws."
Just some interesting information I thought worthy of sharing.
Ok... in trying to sort out the parentage of Stephen Witherington, I'll submit the following notes:
WITHERINGTONS in DOBBS CO in 1790:
Robert is found towards bottom of last column on page 462:
Robert Withrington 1 2 3 0 2
These all appear in the first column on page 463:
Willis Withrington 1 1 2 0 0
Nathan Withrington 1 0 2 0 6
Stephen Withrington 1 3 3 0 0
Daniel Withrington 1 0 2 0 2
Cleaverly Withrington 2 4 4 0 0

Hello Sara,
Perhaps we need to be aware who is suggesting varying values of the
children of Rocksolanah Carruthers & John Wetherington. There are so many
potential descendancy problems for the W'tons, I just am not familiar w/the
problem of this one. As Jean put it yrs ago -
"Barry, I have only William, Cle(a)verly and Robert as the sons of John
and Rocksolanah. There is a Carruthers dau of John Carruthers who md Francis
Hodges. Joseph was also a Carruthers. Jean"
I cant say I keep up w/it all, but where has this one been questioned?
Ann has pointed out, perhaps w/others also, that there are 2 Rocksolannahs,
which could cause a potential problem.
You may have all the info from below, but JIC. If no help, simply
discard.

CLEVELY & DARES Michael A. Smolek March 2, 1999
With the exception of the Robert Widdringtone Will and Inventories of 1722,
this information is based solely on secondary sources and has not been
verified.
In the Widdrington/Witherington/Wetherington family tree one of the son's of
John (born btn 1703-1722) and Rockslannah Widdrington (Witherington) is
named "Clevely" (b.1743). This name is probably derived from the Clevely
family, with the earliest Clevely (Thomas) arriving in Calvert County in
1670. He settled in an area of Calvert County known as the lower Cliffs.
This area is the lower portion of the high cliffs Calvert Cliffs that front
the Chesapeake Bay. The Clevelys were French Huguenots (basically French
Protestants who emigrated in large numbers from France in the 17th century).
Since there was a certain amount of religious tolerance, Maryland was
somewhat attractive to the unwelcome Protestants in Catholic France. The
Clevelys became Quakers (Society of Friends), as did many Puritans in
Maryland. George Fox, the founder of the Society of Friends visited America
and Maryland in 1672-1673. He spent a fair amount of time in Calvert County
and actually held a "Friends" meeting at one of the earliest known Quaker
Meeting Houses at St. Leonards, Calvert County, Md. A narrative of his
travels survives. Surely the Clevely's attended some of the Friends
meetings.
(Hall 1910: 389-406, Stein 1960)
Clevely Widdrington's/ Witherington grandfather was Robert Widdringtone who
died in 1722. According to Robert's Will he mentions five children and his
wife probably predeceased him, as she is not mentioned. Robert left his two
sons under the guardianship of Henry Easterling who was married to their
older sister Elizabeth. They were to get their inheritance once they turned
19, their ages are unknown but their birth date is between 1703-1722. Their
sister Dorcas was put under the guardianship of Walter Smith of St.
Leonards, Calvert County. Walter Smith's wife was Alethea Dare. Their other
sister, Mary, was under the Guardianship of her aunt Miss or Mrs. Mary Dare.
The birth date of the minor girl children is between 1705-1722 as they were
to get their inheritance when they turned 16 years.
Nathaniel Dare is listed in Robert Widdringtone's Inventory as being the
Next of Kin. There were several Nathaniel Dares, however one of these early
ones was married to Thomas Clevely's daughter (Stein 1960: 253). The
connection between Robert Widdringtone and the Dares appears to be that
Robert was probably married to a daughter of Nathaniel Dare or sister of
Nathaniel Dare 2. Walter Smith was probably the children's uncle because he
was married to Alethea Dare. Circumstantial evidence suggests that Robert
Widdrington's wife was a Dare. If this is the case, when John named his son,
Clevely, he was probably naming his son after his mother's father: Thomas
Clevely. There are other possibilities for the relationships mentioned in
the Robert Widdringtone' Will, this relationship is worth investigating
further. More data is needed.

Barry,
Received your e-mail sent through my son, Tom. He forwarded it on to me. I
have been really busy lately with Christmas, cleaning, shopping, cooking,
etc. First chance I have had to answer you.
I am still researching Martins in the sense that I am checking deeds, ct.
minutes etc., for names of all branches of my family. I am sure that my
gr-grgrandmother, Hollon Martin, was either the daughter or granddaughter of
David Martin, who in turn was the son of John Martin, son of John and
Rocksolana Martin; and that that John Martin was the son of Joel Martin of
Bath County. Have not found any connection of this family to those of
Lenoir County. Joel Martin, Sr., did have a son William Martin, and I am
not sure where his family went. They were in Beaufort County for a while .
The other Martins of Craven County, e.g. Thomas Martin and those Martins who
lived near him, appear to be either his sons or nephews, are not related to
the Joel Martin family.
I did find a William Carruthers in Carteret County who sold land to
Archibald Lewis in 1802 (Deed Book K-M, p. 333-334) but have been unable to
find anything else on him. He sounds like he may be a son of John
Carruthers of Craven County (who was the son of William Carruthers, Sr.,
brother of John Carruthers, Sr. They were Rocksolanna Carruthers Martin's
brothers).
Best wishes for Christmas. Thanks for all the great help you have given me.

Is there a list that everyone can agree upon?
Did John or Rocksolanah have a will? If so, does anyone have the text of
it?
Thanks in advance!

late 2003, and, particularly in view of the many new researching members, I
don't think we were able to assimilate even half of the relevant information
provided by Martha and/or the resultant conversation. There is a plethora of
potentially breakthrough information below, including right to the final
paragraphs of this msg.

Hi Martha,
Yours is the kind & level of research I lust to attain, and for which
our Lists Archives are so beautifully designed. Still, it is difficult, at
best, to, as you have done so well, tie disparate facts together leading to
genealogical
leaps. But best of all from my selfish view is that you did it in a Line in
which I have a vital interest.
At the risk of providing too much irrelevant information, causing
confusion rather than enlightenment, I will paste some other potentially
relevant excerpts below. Thus, someone with an interest will have access to
abt 90% of the newer relevant info in this single msg.
. . .
Barry Wetherington
In addition to the surnames above, I suggest that the Hodges (Francis
copied) & the Smiths (Walter Smith 1st Atty Gen MD, Harold Smith
researching) also have an interest in this development. I should also
definitely include Womack & Tuncliff in the interesting Surnames involved,
AWA we've also corroborated relationships to the Bangs, Somervilles,
Parrotts, Parkers, Cleverlys, Clagetts, Bromes, Mackalls, Brights, Battsons,
Easterlings and others that fit into this Tree at various points. The
various Archives contain some quite extensive Trees. The Surname Archives
are all accessible at:

Martha's msg to me (bw):
Greetings,
Recently I have been researching in MD in hopes of finding my husband's
line. Unfortunately that has not happened however, a note from Barry
Wetherington to the Rice-L list the other evening caught my attention. I had
recently found the 1722 will of Robert Widdringtone of Christ Church Parish
in Calvert County, MD mentioned by Barry. His message mentioned Sarah
Carruthers 1728 md Benjamin Rice. I knew there was a 1770 indenture in
Loudoun County, VA between James Carruthers and Samuel Cox which mentioned
James Rice d. 1740. After searching the archives of both Carruthers-L and
Witherington-L, I noted the names Cleverly and Gideon were used in these
families. I noted the following info contained in Barry's message to
Witherington-L 26 Jul 2000 captioned
"Witherington MD Hall of Records Annapolis Info Table:"
"Lib 15c 1694 p163 4 Dec 1694 Came Nath Dare by Robt Carucille his buroerat

I did not find the mention of the 1746 will of Benjamin Rice, Beaufort
County, NC contained in any of the archives and believe it may add something
to the researchers of all of these line. This will was filed with the North
Carolina Office of the Secretary of State rather than at the county level.
Abstracts of these wills can be found in "Abstracts of North Carolina Wills
Compiled From Original and recorded wills in the Office of the Secretary of
State" by Brian Grimes, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1975.
The abstract follows:
Rice, Benjamin, Beaufort County (I believe this is 'our' Benj Rice.
September 12, 1745, June Court, 1746. Sons: Zebulon, Benjamin, James, Even,
Claverly, Ephrim, Hezekiah, Gideon. Wife and Executrix: Mary. Witnesses:
James Humes, Nathaniel Draper, Thomas Willia. Clerk of the Court: John
Forbes.
I certainly hope we will be able to make a connection between the Loudoun
County and MD lines. It will take a lot of digging, but there does appear to
be a connection. This may be hoping for too much, however there was an Evan
Rice who was transported to MD in 1677. This info is contained in Liber 15,
| Folio 430 in the MD Land patents. I would appreciate knowing the contents
of this file if anyone has access to the files in Annapolis. Evan is also
mentioned in the "Passengers and Immigration Lists Index" as having
immigrated from Barbados between 1663-1679.
Martha Rice
PS:
Barry,
The info below may possibly have some connection to your MD lines. Bill
Rice of Texas (. . .) has worked for many years on his line in Loudoun
County. I suggest you contact him. I certainly hope this will be a break
for both of you!

We've also worked w/Harold Smith of the "Aletha Dare 1697 +Walter Smith
1684 - 1748" link you identify below. We've also corroborated some
relationships to the Somervilles, Parrotts, Parkers, Cleverlys, Clagetts,
Bromes, Mackalls, Battsons, Easterlings and others that fit into your Tree
at various points, altho I don't immediately spot the Gen link here.
Obviously, 'our' "Mary Widdrington 1658 +Nathaniel Dare" is in the range to
be related to 'your' "Nathaniel Dare 1678 - 1741 +Mary Cleverly 1675 -
1748", but I digress and speculate here. We have had deep and | enthusiastic
discissions about these issues.
We also have an interesting story about "Aletha Dare 1697 +Walter Smith
1684 - 1748" involving a murder & her former spouse Rev George Cook.

discusses possible connections to Womack, etc. Note some Rice names you have
(Benj and Sarah) are mentioned in the 2 wills below.
| 'My' Benjamin Rice was given a cider cask (obviously the most important
devise of this Robert Widdrington b1680 Md Eliz Dare, MD will) (excerpted

This family eventually migrated to NC, to the New Bern area of Craven Co
NC.

Pat, No, I don't mind at all. What I have been able to get out of it so
far is that Sarah Womack married a Rice. Their children were Thomas (father
of Wm. Sally, Nancy, Charles, and Benjamin), Francis (widow Jamima and son
Isham), Abraham, Fanny Rice (may be a widow of a son of Sarah's had
daughter Nancy), Elizabeth who married a Puckett, and another son the name

Elizabeth Cauthorn was born in 1722((again, the date of Robt Widdrington's

I suppose Sarah Womack Rice was the daughter of William Womack of Charlotte

Hi Paul, I am not related to any of the ones listed in the will but I
wondered if you would mind if I forward it to Caswell Co. list. It might be

I hope this will help someone. There are families that connect to the Rices
consistantly from VA in the early 1700's through the 1800s. The Womacks were
one such family. Other families include: Holcombs, Crenshaws, Harris,

Haven't heard much from the Bangs List recently. Has this NC info been assimilated? Has "Cousin: Elizabeth HOBBS" been identified?
Recall Jon Bangs (s/o Edward!?) & John Carruthers travelled 1738 from the N.E. area down to New Bern NC, bought adjoining land, and presumably started up a seafaring endeavour.
