THE ANCIENT LINE OF CARRUTHERS
Dumfriesshire, Scotland
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/8702/carruthers.html
The family of Carruthers was known in the Southwest Border of Scotland for hundreds of years. The name Carruthers comes from Caer for fort and Rydderch which was a proper name. It gradually changed to the form the family used for generations. One of the earliest of the name was William de Carruthers who made a donation to the Abbey of Newbattle in the reign of Alexander II of Scotland (1215-1245). Much of the earliest information was published by Arthur Stanley Carruthers in his books The Records of the Carruthers Family. The Carruthers were among those who rose with William Wallace (c1272-1305) when he rebelled against English rule. They rose again with Robert the Bruce and were with him at Bannockburn in 1314 when he defeated the English and drove them from Scotland.
Because of this, the Carruthers family is considered a sept of the Bruce clan and are entitled to use the Bruce badge and tartan.

The Tower of Holmains was torn down in the 1800's and nothing remains. However, on our trip to Dumfries, we used an old map to locate
its former position and went out. It is now part of a farm down a narrow country lane. With permission from the family who now own the
land, we walked the mile and half out to the site. Here are a few of the photographs we took.

. . . . . .
Betty and others,
I don't know where the Samuel Caruthers I am seeking information on lived
between Georgia and Florida---I believe this children were all born in
Georgia.....and he was listed on the 1860 census in Orange Co,
Florida....living with, and near, other family members.....63 yrs old at the
time.....this "suggests" he moved directly from Georgia to Florida....as did
his children.....

I have been a member of the Carruthers genforum since 1999. Barry, I have
followed your recent email to check the Carruthers archives. Now, I would
like to ask the list members if they have any information on:
Samuel Caruthers, born 1798 in Georgia, lived in Orange Co, Florida
Wife: Mary Anne Phillips
Children: Augustus, Elbert, Jefferson, Iverson, Littleton, Mary Ann and
Joseph Phillip
To my knowledge at the children stayed in Florida, with the exception of my
gg grandfather, Augustus, who moved to Coleman Co, TX.
Does anyone have any information on the parents or siblings of Samuel
Caruthers, born in Georgia in 1798 and died in Florida?
Is anyone researching this line? I do have the Augustus Caruthers family
bible and good information on Augustus' family and also fairly good
information on the other children of Samuel and Mary Anne....

Hello,
Do you know if this Samuel who was in Georgia ever lived in York Co. SC?
My line Carothers family seems to come from there (York, SC). Later moved to
TN. My great-greatgrandfather, so far as I can determine, was a Samuel
Carothers who died in 1847 I think in Hickman Co. TN. But his family settled in
Madison Co. TN and is listed in the 1840 census there. His widow and family was
listed in Madison Co. in 1850.
Thanks.

Hi Malcolm, (& all Carruthers researchers copied via email)
First, Malcolm, & all Carruthers researchers, I host the Rootsweb
Carruthers List. We would very much like a copy of the headstones text you
mention (see below), at least of the early ones - before abt 1850, depending
how much work it would cause you. Perhaps you can either join and post them
to the Carruthers-L List at:
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/c/carruthers.html
or send them directly to me to post. (cbarrfly(a)comcast.net)
Further below are early Carruthers msgs from the Carruthers Family
Genealogy Forum at:

which may assist us (Carruthers-L) answer some Carruthers genealogical
research questions.
ALL Carruthers researchers, are invited to OneClick join (Free) our

and please contribute there and more here also. We have much of value &
interest in our Extensive Archives! However, below we have spotted some
particular questions/ issues for discussion.

We just might have something. What do you know about the Alexander
family ties to family, Son Alexander is most likly named for the Alexander
line. James, Jane, William,Robert,Mary, Nancy (Agnes) very commonly used
name in all lines, Nicholas this could be a clue, i decend from John
Carruthers and Nicholas Jardine , this couple better known as John The 7th
lord 3rd Baron of Holmains, and Nicholas , Nicholas of Applegrath , marrage
date 1575. The Name George was used aswell.
Alexander Carruthers , If I'm right, and you can tie into or have a good
handle on the Alexander lines, then we should be able to get you placed, the
Va,lines are of my lines.

I have some 27 gravestone texts for Carruthers from Arthuret Church near
Longtown Cumbria. The early stones are from 1783 up to 1990's but mostly
from the 1800's. due to the condition and age of some of the stones not all
the text is complete, however, there is still a lot of information available
to anyone who wants a copy. Simply give me a call and I will send asap.

I have a John Carruthers born in Scotland but lived in Savannah, Ga. for
many years. In his will of 1859, which is quite detailed, he mentions the
following: Sister, Margarett Johnston, sister Agnes Laidlaw, sister Mary
Watson, sister Christiana Whitelaw, sister Henrietta Thomson, and brothers
James and William Carruthers of Thomaston, Upson Co, Ga.
Of John Carruthers, his birth record says "November 25th 1816 John
Carruthers and his wife Margaret Welsh at Brownmoor had a son named John"
Scotish census records show his father born in Dumfriesshire. Is this any
connection?

Hi Lesley[ft107(a)slc-learningcentres.org.uk]
Simon Carruthers, shepherd at Newton in the parish of Crawford was baptised
the third son of John Carruthers and Jean Martin on 19th October 1783. He
died at Elvanfoot Cottage on 12th August 1863. His death certificate
confirms his parentage. He had married Ann Edgar. Their second son was also
called Simon and was baptised before the congregation on the 15th July 1811.
This Simon was a mason to trade. He married twice. His first wife was Janet
Robertson and they had two recorded sons, Simon 1839 and John 1840, parish
of Carluke. This Janet Robertson clearly died young for Simon later married
Mary Kirkhope on the 2nd November 1851 in the parish of Douglas. The OPRs
show there was two recorded children, Ann 1854 and Robert 1858. Hope this
helps.
Regards
Jim Carruthers

This is from a letter I rec-d from a Mr a Macleod : Your surname originated ( as far as we are aware ) in Dumfries-shire in the South of
Scotland where a property of the name "Carruthers" was located in the
parish of Middebie. It was commonplace for families in Lowland Scotland
to assume their surnames from the lands which they held directly from the Crown or from some Nobleman. You might be interested to note that
a section of the Carruthers family appear to have moved from Scotland
to Ulster Northern Ireland in the 1600's est. a bloodline there. It is
possible that they settled there as a part of a group which we in Scotland
call The Ulster Planters or The Ulster Scots and on the subsequent mirgration of some of their number to the Americas, they were initially termed Irish though latterly referred to as The Scots-Irish to clearly
identify them from the later immigrants (of native Gaelic Irish stock )
arriving in the late 1700's and early 1800's.

Hello again Lists, (confined this time to those Surnames with a strong likelihood of a UK connection)
Below are some representative Surnames results from the fantastic new UK database which was the subject of my email of a few hrs ago. You can get a good idea of the possibilities by looking at the results pasted below. Keep in mind that I have brought in only a few representative results - many others were avail.
These results are Free, but only give sketchy info. For each surname, if you wish the more extensive results, you must pay - the cost seemes to average 10-25 cents per surname. You can (obviously, as I did) search for the entire sample size w/ its sketchy info for free, then order just those you wish. So if you decided to sign up w/credit card for $10, you could order the full ONLINE results for about 40-100 persons/records. If any of these extended results established a record that you wanted, you can then take the next (3d) step to order a copy of the ORIGINAL record from the Custodian. This would require you to contact the Custodian and negotiate a cost for a person to copy the record and mail/fax it to you.
If any of you do decide to go forward, pls let me know how you rate the results, so we can tell others.

Hi ALL,
One of 'our' limitations for research, particularly searching for UK
emigrants to US, is the difficulty of locating relevant UK records. Well,
thanks to Richard Eastman's (Free) Newsletter and the U.K. Federation of
Family History Societies, we now have a method to do economical online
research in UK records. For ex., this info was free, see further below for
more:
[bw comment - the list of the 5 names w/info below was free!!! - read on
further below for his article, or subscribe (see below) to read his full
interesting new NewsLetter. He eventually odered a record and paid about a
dime (10 cents) for the one record he ordered. bw 10/21/03]

Thanks to Richard Eastman for his VERY informative discussion of this
Excellent UK resource. Hope we get something similar for German research.
(There is a recent publication that determined that more of 'our' US
ancestors immigrated from Ger than fm UK)

- FamilyHistoryOnline.net
The U.K. Federation of Family History Societies has collected numerous
databases and placed them online at www.FamilyHistoryOnline.net. This
"pay-per-view" site contains data contributed by county societies around
England and Wales. This week I had a chance to use FamilyHistoryOnline.net
and was quite impressed by what I saw.
FamilyHistoryOnline.net presently contains 15.7 million records, including
indexes (and sometimes more) of baptisms, marriages, burials, monumental
inscriptions, and census returns. Unlike some other online databases, all of
the data has been transcribed by experienced genealogists, ensuring a rather
high level of accuracy. Most of the data entry was conducted under auspices
of county genealogy societies, normally the experts in the records being
transcribed.
The amount of information varies widely from county to county. However, as
an example of what you might find, here is the listing for Yorkshire:
North Yorkshire & South Durham 1851 Census Index - ongoing - 57,045+ entries
Halifax RD 1851 Census Index 120,903 entries
Halifax St John Baptism Details 1 place (1813-1838) - ongoing - 16,708
entries
Morley District Baptism Details 6 places (1743-1958)* - 11,072 entries
Elland St Mary Baptism Details 1 place - ongoing - 726 entries
Halifax St John Marriage Details 1 place (1754-1837) - ongoing - 31,724
entries
Morley District Marriage Details 6 places (1655-1975)* - 2,237 entries
Elland St Mary Marriage Details 1 place - ongoing - 726 entries
Bradford Parish Church Burial Details 1 place (1681-1837) - 36,804 entries
Halifax St John Burial Details 1 place (1813-1837) - ongoing - 11,175
entries
NBI - City of York & District FHS 143 places (1600-1921)* - 63,857 entries
NBI - Cleveland FHS 192 places (1538-1997)* - 313,662 entries
NBI - Huddersfield & District FHS 49 places (1559-1984)* - 194,359 entries
NBI - Morley & District FHG 10 places (1600-1982)* - 80,221 entries
NBI - Northumberland & Durham FHS 1 place (1753-1772) - 676 entries
NBI - Rotherham FHS 21 places (1541-1985)* - 115,783 entries
NBI - Sheffield & District FHS 13 places (1789-1993)* - 289,929 entries
NBI - Yorks. Archaeological Soc. FH Section 23 places (1764-1921)* 69,123
entries
You can find a complete listing for all counties at
http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/database/index.shtml .
The abbreviation "NBI" indicates a project that is part of the National
Burial Index. An asterisk indicates that the exact years vary from one
parish to the next. The word "ongoing" indicates that the project isn't yet
finished, but the work done-to-date is available online.
I decided to try this database to see what was available. I first had to
obtain a user ID and password. That turned out to be a rather painless
process. I then was able to search the databases without payment of any sort
of fee. The database would return the name(s) but with no significant
details. In order to view the remainder of the information, a payment is
necessary.
Searches may include any combination of the following criteria:
Surname (optionally including variants)
Forename (optionally including variants)
County or area
Year, either exact or plus/minus 1, 2, 5, 10, or 25 years
An option to include birth years, typically estimated from the other
information found in the records. For instance, a marriage record in 1724
listing the bride as being 21 years old would thereby deduce that she was
born in 1703. You can elect whether or not to use these derived birth years
in your searches.
I first did a search for my own surname in Wiltshire. This search was just
on the surname, leaving all other fields blank. The database then told me
that it contained 32 records that met my search criteria. Here is a list of
the first five:
[bw comment - the list of the 5 names w/info below was free!!! - read on.

5EdithEASTMANNational Burial Index (Wiltshire FHS)WIL159215921£0.05
The first five all happened to be females; but, looking further down the
list, I saw numerous males listed as well. The price shown after each record
is the fee you must pay to view the record. The fees that I noticed in this
database varied from £0.05 to £3.60 (approximately 8 cents to $6.00 in U.S.
funds). There may be even higher fees; however, £3.60 was the highest that I
saw. Most of the fees were less than £0.20 per record.
It isn't yet practical to make a £0.05 charge anywhere on the Internet.
Therefore, you must purchase "credits" in advance. You purchase these
"credits" in blocks of £5.00, £10.00, £20.00, or £50.00 at a time. The
payment is made with a credit card on a safe and secure Web server. The
whole process required about two minutes to complete.
Armed with £5.00 in credits, I returned to the search results and clicked on
the first person shown in the above list. The next screen displayed all the
following details:
Administration WILTSHIRE

status spinster
notes -
Bondsmen LOADER John, cordwainer,
Enford,Wiltshire
to be married at Downton/St Thomas Salisbury
Amount paid £0.07 [abt ten cents]
The source of MLB indicates that the original record was found in the
Marriage License Bonds for Sarum (the old name for Salisbury).
The record that I found was easily copied-and-pasted into the word processor
I use to write this newsletter. It can also be copied into most other
Windows or Macintosh programs. The information could have been printed on my
printer, had I wished to do so. As that record cost £0.07, I now had £4.93
remaining to be used in other searches.
The fee that I paid was for the index only. However, a genealogist will
always want to obtain a copy of the original record as it usually contains
more information than what can be found in the index. If I wish to obtain a
copy of any original record, that will be an off-line task. While this site
does not include original records, it does point the user in the right
direction. In the case of the above record, I clicked on "Sarum Marriage
Licence Bonds" to display information on where to obtain a copy:
Wiltshire Family History Society provide an enquiry service - their address
is: 10 Castle Lane, Devizes, Wiltshire SN10 1HJ, or email
society(a)wiltshirefhs.co.uk or via website www.wiltshirefhs.co.uk.
A CD-ROM of the marriage licence bonds and allegations in fully searchable
form is available from the Society.
The Wiltshire FHS has also produced many parish register indexes and other
publications. These can also be purchased online via FamilyHistoryBooks or
by mail order from the Society.
All in all, FamilyHistoryOnline.net is a great resource for anyone searching
for ancestry in England. The site already has more than 15 million records,
all transcribed by experienced genealogists. We can assume a low error rate
although no transcription is ever perfect.
Best of all, the money spent on these searches is sent back to the societies
that contribute the data. Only a small percentage is kept by the Federation
of Family History Societies to pay for the Web servers, networks, and other
associated overhead expenses. The bulk of the money is used to fund further
transcription efforts.
If you are researching English ancestry, you should check
www.FamilyHistoryOnline.net right now. The search for records is free. You
only have to pay for the details you want. It costs nothing to see if there
any possible "hits" in the database.
The Federation of Family History Societies' Web site may be found at:
http://www.FamilyHistoryOnline.net.

Deb, The wrench you threw in the works has been there for years. Scores of women of our line have gone into the DAR on our William, all that I know of claim his birth to be Cumberland, PA and that his parents were John and Content. That info came from a family tree made by William's son Samuel Mitchell Caruthers. No researcher known to me has been able to prove that to be true or in error. John nor either of his wives are known to have been in PA at any time. I am hoping that you and the others will use the material I am sending you to shed some light. As to Howmaine, Scotland PA, that is someones mistake, maybe mine. Bill Moore

Subject: Carruthers, 2Rocksolanas and William
I descend from the William who married Sarah Harvey and have been convinced he was descended from John and Content, or John and Sarah Jones (1st spouse). Your work and that of Ann Davis Ohmsen of Roanoke, VA has led me to doubt the William/John relationship. Mrs. Ohmsen, whose research seems excellent and extensive has no computer, although I am urging her to get one and join the Carruthers group. She descends from Rocksolana, aunt of Barry's Rocksolana.
I have a package of her work and would send copies to each of you if you will give me mailing addresses. I will send to her the 2 Rocksolana Carruthers Bangs Rice summary that Barry sent on Sunday Oct 12. I have talked with her about sharing with you two and she seems anxious to do so. I am hoping to get resolution to my William/John mystery out of your cooperation with Mrs Ohmsen. W B Moore

just read your post, on Carruthers line. would like to add some information. On some records Andrew's wife goes by Catharine Elizabeth
. and William Howell thier son was married to a Sarah
Lacy she died in 1833 the first three children were theirs William, 1829
Howell ( JH ) 1831 and James 1833 I believe she might have died in
child birth. William remarried in 1834 to Sarah M Barr. And my
Grandfather Robert Oscar Carothers Sr Was married to Lulu Lovelady
1908 she parished in a barn fire in 1913 they had two daughters
Anne Sue , Beulah Ben . Oscar married my grandmother Juanita Howell
1918 in Reeves Co Tx. at this time Juanita had a daughter Alameda Nadean . and then they had Roberta ( Bobbie ) nita and my dad Robert
O Carothers Jr ( RO ). Nadean took the Carothers name and she married William Edward Wozencraft Sr. They had one son William E Jr .
William married Terrye ( do not have a last name ) they had three
daughters Kim, Karen and Kristen. Bobbie married Wesly Matthews
they had two children Linda Sue , James wesly .
Hi, Deb,
Thanks for the Scotland information. Just wish I could make the connecting
link back to Scotland. I will be sending you the Craven County, North Carolina
land grants to John Carruthers which also mention William Carruthers's
property line.

I have records of from Scotland , that I will send you, and I know we
had a Samuel in Ga in 1804 he was a brother to Andrew and William
who all moved to Tenn . Now your Samuel might be one of thier sons
looking into it. And the Spence I have was in Tenn not sure where he
came from, right now still working on Carothers. There are so many names
to look for. My grand father Oscar was a Rancher in Toyah Tx there is
a book about Toyah in our libaray here ( by the way I live about 10miles
from Lubbock ) and it talks a little bit abt my grandfather in this book.
Hope some of the Scotland infor helps you .
Jane Carruthers married Wm. Hillis, possibly in Washington Co. PA. Jane was
born 1750.
I do not know Jane's parents' names. Does she fit into anyone's Carruthers
family? She died 1814, and is buried at Ryker's Ridge Cemetery, several miles
northeast of Madison, Indiana. Her father is said to have been "a James River
planter." Jane and William Hillis were my gr-gr-gr grandparents.

Thanks, Deborah,
You're information on your Caruthers family in Texas was of interest. I
would certainly like copies of the pages from the Hickman Co book.....
I believe that I still have quite a few Caruthers/Carruthers in Texas that
are related to me.....
You're mention of the name of Oscar "perked up my ears".....this is what I
have for an Oscar Caruthers in TX:
Oscar Caruthers born Sept 12, 1884 in San Angelo, Tom Green, TX and died
June 1973 in Lubbock, Lubbock, TX. He was the son of Heinman Gough
Caruthers---grandson of my Augustus Lafayette Caruthers.....in 1910 he was
listed on the Terrell Co, TX census....his older brother was named
"Robert"...younger sister named Susan D.
For Spence:
My grandmother was Alla Spence born Aug 11, 1891 in San Marcos, Hays,
TX...married Aug 11, 1909 in Uvalde Co, Tx to Quincy Edward Cargile.
Her father was Seaborn Joseph Spence born Oct 12, 1854 in Campbell Co, GA.
(wife: Sophia Medina Driskill)
Seaborn's father was Osborn E Spence, born Jan 2, 1827 in Davidson Co, NC
(wife:Mary Janelle Watts)
I have been following the discussion on the Caruthers genforum about the
Caruthers family from Dumfrieshire, Scotland.....I don't see all the
connections that are being made yet.....but all the discussion is very much
of interest.....I have "always" known that my Caruthers family "go back" to
Dumfrieshire, Scotland.....just need to build all the steps connecting until
I reach there.....so far, I've either missed (or don't understand) the next
step determining who the parents of Samuel Caruthers born in 1829 in Georgia
are....
Also of interest to me is the family of JOHNSTONE who lived in the same area
of Scotland.....they are ancestors of my children...whose genealogy I also
trace for them.......
If you think that I have any genealogical information that would be of
interest to you, I will happily send it to you.

Ok let me throw a wench to the works. I just found a post from a
Darryl Deron Vickers ( sfcvickers(a)yahoo.com ) He has a listing for
John and Content Carruthers and they list the children as Rocksolanah,
John II , Sarah, Francis and William . Birthdates range from 1720-1736
and he list Birth place as Cumberland area of N.C. According to American
Migration Routes , 1735-1815 that I have . They mention Cumberland Gap, Cumberland Mts, Cumberland River , Cumberland Rd and Cumberland
MD. and a few of these cover more than one state. And I have this from RichardCrothers ( rcrothers(a)dol.net. Cumberland PA did not become a Co. until 1750 before that lands west of the Susquehanna
were part of Lancaster Co PA .Some lands west of the Susquehanna were
purchased in 1718, mostly southern York Co. In 1712 the area west of the
Susquehanna was Native Amercian land ( Genealogial Map of Counties of PA.) I plan on e-mailing Darryl to see what other information he might
have and see where it came from.
And can any one tell me what Howmaine, Scotland Pa means ?????
