Hello everyone,
I have a question and an item of interest on the subject of Castles and
Carruthers.
QUESTION: It has been a story in our family that one of our Carruthers built
the clock in the clock tower in Langholm, Scotland. Other stories say some
of our Carruthers built household clocks in New York. When I visited
Langholm in the late 1990s, a resident told me that up until the 1980s a
Carruthers worked on the clock. Do any of you know any facts to support
these stories?
CASTLE/CARRUTHERS: In an autobiography written by a Carruthers cousin John
Bates (his information follows this paragraph), he says his grandmother's
(Ellen (Cameron) Carruthers) father was an architect. "He designed the plans
for Lagham Castle, Scotland, and the building was erected under his
superintendence. My grandmother often spoke of the visits she made to the
castle, when as a little girl she accompanied her father there." He does not
list his great-grandfather's name.
John Bate's mother was Jane Carruthers b. April 11, 1813 in Langholm,
Scotland. Jane's parents were John and Ellen or Helen (Cameron) Carruthers
who emigrated to America in 1821. Jane was sister of Peter Cameron
Carruthers (my ancestor) who married Cordelia Sheldon. Jane Carruthers
married Dennis Bates and gave birth to John the author of the autobiography.
Any information on the lines affiliated with these two items would be
greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Kelley (Carruthers) Buttrick
Betty,
You are referring to Comlongon Castle, located in Dumfries, Scotland.
The "ghost" is that of Lady Marion Carruthers, daughter of Sir Simon
Carruthers, Baron of Mouswald. Please check out my wife's web site at:
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/8702/carruthers.html
Scroll down to "MARION" and click on her name for a complete run-down on
taleof Marion and Comlongon Castle.
We also have photographs of Comlongon, just click on the links at the
bottom of the page depicting the tale.

DAve

My Carothers family ends with my ancestor, Nancy Carothers, who was born c.
1819 in Washington Co., TN. She m. Solomon Henry Kuhn in 1841, and about
1851 moved with him and their children to Laurel Co., KY. Nancy's father was
James Carothers/Carathers, who was a blacksmith in TN. James' father was
Jonathan Carathers (War of 1812), and his mother was Sarah Young, from
Rockbridge, VA.
Incidentally, the town of Dumfries is only about 10 miles west from
Lockerbie, the site of the tragic plane crash a few years ago, when so many
people lost their lives because of a bomb placed aboard.

Hello,
Recently I was watching a television program which mentioned a castle in
Scotland being associated with the Carruthers or Carrothers family. The
owner around 1300 (I am not really sure of this date) was, I believe, a David
Carruthers. This was Cumloden Castle (I am not sure of this spelling,
either) and there was a tragedy connected with it. The ghost of David
Carruther's daughter is said to haunt this castle. Whether one believes in
hauntings or not, the story is an interesting one!
My great-grandmother was Harriet Carothers (Woodell), born about 1830 in
Madison County, TN. Her parents were so far as I have been able to
determine, Samuel and Rachel Robertson Carothers. They were born in South
Carolina and probably his ancestors are the Carothers who settled in
Pennsylvania.

(Vonskipper(a)aol.com)
Is anyone researching the Carothers of Washington Co., Pa--late 1700s into
the 1800s? My ancestor Wm. Hillis married Jane Carothers about 1755. They
were in Washington Co. in the 1780s. Trying to find Jane's parents. There
are Carothers there, but which one?
Evea Bachnak
Will there be many American Carruthers surnamed after places? It is usually
said in British genealogy that by, say, 1640 surnames had mostly become
fixed and hereditary, apart from some remnants of the patronymic systems in
Wales and Scotland. Maybe in early America with people being much more
mobile, maybe trying to escape or otherwise cut off from their past in the
"old country", there would have been more people taking surnames they
weren't born with, but still I reckon most people will have inherited the
surname Carruthers, possibly giving it to a place, rather than taking it
from a place.
You might be interested to know, if you didn't already, that the source
place for the name Carruthers is in Scotland, in the old county of
Dumfriesshire (now part of Dumfries and Galloway i think) in the south-west
near the English border and sea crossings to Ireland. I once found the
origin of the surname on a Carruthers website and apparently the place name
is a corruption of a Gaelic phrase, something like Caer Rydarch, meaning
Rydarch's Castle, where Rydarch is a personal name referring to the
individual's red hair or complexion. Something like that anyway. To judge
from the distribution of Carrutherses in British records, the name was still
concentrated quite strongly in the area during the 1800s.
It is the area where my Carruthers ancestors are from so I'm as always
interested to hear from anyone with possible links.

I have found my 6th GGrandpts in Howmaine Scotland William b-1682 and Joanne b-1686
They went from there to Pa on into Ga and to Nc and end up in Tenn where they did alot
in HickmanCo in Centerville. My GGrandpts went on in to Tex ( Amiz & Annie Carothers )
to Goldthwaite Tx where my Grandfather Robert Oscar Carothers Sr was born . Then they
move where then my GGrandfather helped to est. the town of Rochester Tex by giving land
for the railroad and est-ing schools and churches, The main street in Rochester is called
Carothers Ave and they also have two family plots in the Cemeteries there. My father
Robert O JR was born in Toyha Tx in 1926 he also worked for the railroad for 26 yrs.
It seems that alot of the Carothers worked for the railroad. I was 6 wks old when I took
my first train ride and 8 when my Dad put the in the engine for a ride. I guess if had been
a boy thats where I would have gone ,but back then little girls didn't, they were told to be just
good mothers & wifes . Well now if my daughter are grandaughter want to work for the
railroad they can.

Deb, (& Marion, & Ian & the 2 Carruthers Brothers)
I take it then that some of these locations (see below for the posted
locations and Deb's message) might be familiar to some of you? Three
excellent follow-up messages! Can you (and others reading this message) post
your Carruthers Tree? That would be very interesting to many of us!
Barry
PS: Are the 2 Carruthers Brothers still participating on the List? They were
very knowledgeable about early periods.

Hello Carruthers List, (and others interested in places named after your
ancestors)
Below is my inquiry of recent FYI - but this message is about something
else - locating the various US locations named after the 'Carruthers', or
something else w/the same name. To see for yourself, Click On the Link below
(the Govt USGS gnis server), then enter Carruthers in [only] the 'Feature
Name' block, then be very patient and wait, what seems like 2-3 mins but is
shorter.
In about 30-40 secs, the Carruthers [or Ratliff, Dare, Witherington, etc]
place names will be displayed, along exact GPS location, and many other
tools, including the Terra Server aerial photos, which can be zoomed in.
This can be helpful for locating Cems.
You'll begin to contemplate whether the place was named for your ancestor,
or vice-versa. Good luck!

Much more likely that places were named for a person or persons with the
surname of Carruthers.
In Southwest Montana, there is a road named for my grandfather. His
parents came over from Scotland in 1849, settled in Pennsylvania, then
Ohio, where he was born in 1861. He made his way west to Colorado,
Idaho and then Montana because he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad.
I had a friend years ago who was from Tennessee. She said she knew a
Ewing Carruthers and a Carruthers Ewing. The earliest Carruthers
immigrants appear to have been into the South before the Revolution.
And Dumfriesshire is not the only place in Scotland you will find the
Carruthers surname. Would that it were...it would be easier to follow my
line.
There were Carruthers very early in Australia and in Canada as well.
In the Montana town where I was born there were two different families of
Carruthers, unrelated. There were enough of the line not related to mine
that the area where they lived was nicknamed "Carruthersville".
Some Native Americans surnames may come from the places where their
tribes were indigenous. Or from events or individual deeds or
accomplishments.
People going through Ellis Island frequently ended up with new names
because the person processing their papers could not spell the name. I
knew a fella whose parents were Polish Jews with an unpronounceable name.
The processor at Ellis Island gave them the name of Brown..and Brown he
lived and Brown he died. He said he never did know what his name really
was....
