Hello Anne Gault, Jacksonville, Florida, (My GF's home),
Thank you very much for the Jonathan b & d dates and location, and other
valuable to us information, which is very helpful. I can't tell to whom your
note is addressed, but, at the risk of being presumptuous, and since in
recent messages to the Bangs List, I have copied and pasted a great deal of
information, I will respond.
You mention children of Jonathan. Is there info avail to determine which
wife bore them, how many, or names? It isn't totally clear to me if it was
made clear in our message, and this is recent and as yet not fully
documented, but I don't think we are claiming 'our' Jonathan was Edwd's son,
rather the research suggests he was a descendant of Edwd. That could account
for the discrepancy in wives you point out. We have not yet made a
determination of descendancy. Have you or other Bangs representatives known
to you had the opportunity to review the extensive Yale Library Bangs
records? I would guess there are refs to children, spouses, dates,
locations, etc there, which might clear up this discrepancy. Mass. is a bit
far for Christine (Texas) and myself (CA), but we do hope to review the Yale
info one day.
We did post Christine's research info and refs, hoping researchers, such
as yourself, could expand, for which thanks. JIC you were not able to locate
her notes, I've re-reproduced them below, entitled 'Sources of research.
However, we encourage someone near to the site to pick up from where
Christine exited with what was, for us, some epiphanic results, particularly
considering we were not previously focused on the Bangs surname.
Again, thanks Anne and we look fwd to more Bangs/Carruthers/W'ton
synergistic research results.

Hi Maureen, [and all Bangs researchers on the List]
The only Bangs of whom we had ever been aware is Abiah Bangs, and up pops
Content (Bangs) md on of 'our' Carruthers:
- Edwd Bangs (arrived on the Anne to Mass. 1623) and his descendant (SON?)
Jonathan Bangs md Abiah Carruthers,
- John Carruthers (bro of Abiah) md Content Bangs (sis of Jon)
- Rocksolannah Carruthers md John Witherington s/o Robt
Widdrington(e)/Witherington d 1722 md Elizabeth Dare
And so, in one incredibly packed message/exchange, we joined the Bangs
family at an early time, w/no known present/recent connections.
While we have all been aware that there was a possible, even suspected,
Bangs connection, because of the prominence played by the Bangs in the lives
of Carruthers/Wtons (and how significant does that witness to the John
Carruthers 1751 will by the name of Abiah Bangs look now!!!), we've been
busy doing gen, but nut much Bangs Gen, so we are not knowledgeable of any
present Bangs Gen.
However, I'm posting this to the Bangs-L List, in case someone can
assist.
Good luck,
Barry

Hi & Thanks Tex,
Is it your thought that this Edward BANGS 1591-1677 is the 'Patriarch'
Edward BANGS arrived to Mass. on the 'Anne' 1607 and featured in the Library
collection(s), see our prior messages of recent. He would have been abt 16
yrs old then.
I'm unfamiliar w/Robt Hicks - why are you following his connection to
Bangs? Is he impor to your Line (and mine)? This is certainly a valuable
Link, and begins to flesh out our Bangs/Carruthers/W'ton/Dare connection to
an even greater detail.
Thanks for thinking of us!

Hi Gary,
This is all that I have on my Elizabeth Carruthers. I have not been able to
get even a lead on her or who she belongs to. All I know about her is what
happened after she m. Solomon McAlpin and his father, Alexander McAlpin came
from Scotland. If you could help me, it would really be appreciated!!
Thanks.
Pat McAlpine

Well, Diane, I am from Montana..and was born in Butte in 1919. My mother
was born in Butte in 1893 -her father ran one of the first breweries in
Butte. She married my father, Earl Carruthers in 1914, I think it was. He
was born in Denver, but was living in Dillon when they met.
My grandfather, Sam Carruthers, was station agent for the Union Pacific
RR in Dillon for many years, prior to that was in Market Lake Idaho and
Colorado.
But I don't think we are related. And am astonished to hear there were
other Carruthers in Butte area. Seemed like there were no Carruthers
anywhere when I was growing up, except my cousins.
My grandfather was the youngest of 8 children, three of whom were born in
Scotland. the family emigrated in 1849, to Pennsylvania, then to Ohio.
His parents were John and Sarah Gillespie Carruthers. John served in the
Civil War, died in 1869. Sarah moved to Nebraska and died there.
There are many variations of the name Carruthers. I have been able to
trace my g-g-grandfather and grandmother, in Scotland, but have gotten no
further back than that.
Caruthers, Crothers, Carradas, Cruthers, Carithers ...am sure there is a
connection with all these names, but it is so far back....
There are Carruthers in many parts of Scotland, so it is hard to figure
out which ones are one's ancestors. There were Carruthers along the
border around Carlisle England. Did you ever read about The Reivers?
Marion Carruthers Musgrove
There seem to be lots of Carruthers in the South. I knew someone from
Tennessee who said she knew a Carruthers Ewing and a Ewing Carruthers.
There is a Carruthersville in Tennessee, I think.
I have concluded (perhaps erroneously) that the ones who came over in the
18th century probably were of a more affluent class than the ones who
came in the mid 19th century...time of the potato famine which affected
Scotland as well as Ireland.
My Scottish g-grandparents came over in 1849, leaving behind an infant
son...my poor g-grandmother had a 6, 3 and 2 year old, and appears she
left the 3 year old with a sister. But when he grew up and married, he
came over in 1869, not long before his father died. After a year in Ohio
went to Pennsylvania, where he lived out his life, working in the coal
mines.
Marion,
I'm not sure what you want me to do? Are you wanting to unsubscribe from
the Carruthers list or are you getting two copies and just want the one
address? I see that you're subscribed to both the L list and the digest
list. Let me know and I'll take care of it. Thanks. :)
Pat

Drop one subscription, and the digest. Keep the one for this account.
I started it as just for genealogy, but hasn't worked that way...when I
want to send an e-mail not connected with genealogy, I go ahead and do it
rather than jump from one account to another.
when I was growing up in Montana, other than my father's family, there
were no Carruthers around. Thought we had found some kin, then discovered
the girl had been adopted!
I can't figure out if the Carruthers clan just doesn't care about
genealogy or????
Have been very lucky with tracing my grandfather's siblings in U. S, but
not much luck on the other side of the pond.
Many thanks, Pat.
Here's a posting that came through to me because they weren't subscribed but
thought somebody might be interested in the info. If you're interested in
it, you'll have to contact her personally. Thanks.

Pat, I find I am already subscribed at my other (genealogy account)
marion180(a)juno.com
I apologize for not doing this right, but not sure in what sequence the
REQUEST should go.
Here is something you might find worth posting on this list
THE GENEALOGIST'S PSALM
Genealogy is my pastime, I shall not stray;
It maketh me to lie down and examine half-buried tombstones.
It leadeth me into still Court Houses,
It restoreth my ancestral knowledge.
It leadeth me in paths of census records and ships'
passengers list for my surname's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the shadows
of research libraries and microfilm readers,
I shall fear no discouragement;
For a strong urge is within me;
The curiosity and motivation
They comforteth me.
It demandeth preparation of storage space for the
acquisition of countless documents;
It anointest my head with burning midnight oil,
My family group sheets runneth over.
Surely birth, marriage, and death dates shall follow me
all the day of my life;
And I shall dwell in the house of a family-history seeker
for ever.
By Wildamae Brestal
I don;t know who Wildamae is but she deserves an award of some kind!
Marion
Thanks for sending this on, but mine are Carruthers and went to
Pennsylvania, Ohio, Nebraska and Colorado.
For the number of Carruthers listings one finds in the Old Parish Records
of Scotland, it is very difficult to find any immgrant Carruthers who
connect with me!
Been able to tracks some of them down to finding cousins also looking,
but still looking for some of a family of 8 who were in Nebraska and some
in Colorado.
