Hello Brenda and all,
NOTE to Brenda, sorry you will receive this twice, when I post only to the
CARRUTHERS-L(a)rootsweb.com, most messages bounce. HUM???
My records indicate Rebecca married John Carnahan and they had 7 known
children all born Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland. Rebecca and husband
both died Westmorland Co., Pennsylvania. I have no further info. on their
family. Source for their information was:

My notes for Rebecca's father John:
John emigrated with his parents in 1712 to Strabane, County Londonderry,
Ireland where his father was a cordwainer* and afterwards to Letterkenny,
County Donegal, Ireland before 1729. He migrated to America [aft. 1747] and
settled in Cumberland Co., PA with friends and relatives and he died there
prior to 16 Nov 1762.
At an Orphans Court held at Carlisle, for the County of Cumberland, the 16th
day of November, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and
sixty-two before John Byers, William Spear, and John Montgomery, Esqs.,
Justices etc. for said County. Came into court James Caruthers and Rebecca
Caruthers, minor children of John Caruthers, late of Cumberland County,
deceased, and prayeth the Court that William Clark may be appointed
guardian over their persons and estates during their minority (children to
ask for a guardian must be over 14 years of age). The court does consider
and appoint William Clark, guardian over the persons and estates of the
said James Caruthers and Rebecca Caruthers during their minority. Came into
Court, William Caruthers and prayeth the Court that guardians may be
appointed over the persons and estates of John and Hugh Caruthers, under
the age of 14, two minor children of John Caruthers, late of Cumberland
County, deceased. The Court does consider and appoint Ezekiel Smith,
guardian over the persons and estates of the said John and Hugh Caruthers
during their minority.
At an Orphans Court held in Carlisle, for the county of Cumberland, August
23, 1765, before Andrew Calhoon, Robert Willer and William Lyon, Esqs.
Justice of said Court, etc. of John Caruthers, late of Cumberland County,
deceased. Distribution to the heirs of the late John Caruthers, James
Caruthers, a minor and eldest son, Rebecca, a minor, John a minor, and Hugh
Caruthers, a minor.

Death DATE 1761,Cumberland,PA
NOTE John Carruthers, born 1698 in *Rammerscales, Scotland, went first to
Ireland, then to America, arriving there about 1730-40.
NOTE: Last child Hugh Carruthers born May 03, 1747, Letterkenny, County
Donegal, Ireland, so arrival into America after 1747
* I show born Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland
---------------------------
* Note: cordwainer was a term for a shoemaker who worked with Cordwain
leather.
============================
OF NOTE: IGI file # AFN-XJ9N-XK
Lists this son HUGH as married to Sarah Purviance, this is incorrect
The *Hugh that married Sarah was born 1726 Rammerscales, Scotland and was the
son of James Carrothers and Unknown mother.
*Hugh was a twin of John Carrothers who married Sarah Neely.
==================
This portion of the court records gives question as to the proper reported
dates of birth for their children, until we find what seems to be records for
two sons being named James. ANY THOUGHTS APPRECIATED
"Came into court James Caruthers and Rebecca Caruthers, minor children of
John Caruthers, late of Cumberland County, deceased, and prayeth the Court
that William Clark may be appointed guardian over their persons and estates
during their minority (children to ask for a guardian must be over 14 years

Hello Rosemary and other researchers,
I would like to share some information with you on the Carruthers family.
None of this is my research, it is from notes done by a cousin that has since
passed. He had planned on writing a book, and after his death all his
research was left with a wife who was not interested and no one knows where
the original records are that could site sources or the line of descent. What
I have is a copy of a disc made some years ago it is in a form very hard to
use, but there are a few gems to be had. I have made no attempt here to place
them into any flowing linage, hope to be able to sort them soon.
Hope these notes will be of some small help.
Regards,
Jean Wilson

I am doing research on this family and seeing how The Dormont and Holmains
family broke away. Is any one else doing this research, perhaps we could
share resources. It seems we all started with Willim de Carruthers making a
donation to Abbey of Newbattle in the reign of Alexander 11 (1215-1245)

I copied the following from "Families and History of Sullivan County,
Tennessee, Vol. One, 1779-1992." I found this book at the Mormon library in
Salt Lake.
page 435: JOSEPH GRAY (1768-1847)
>From an old apprentice paper dated September 12, 1780, at the age of twelve
years, he (Joseph Gray) became an apprentice to JAMES CARRUTHERS to learn the
"art, trade or mastery of skin dressing or breeches making" for a period of
three years and nine months. During this period, Joseph Gray was to "serve
his master faithfully ... keep his commands ... and do no damage to his
master." Neither was he "to waste his master's goods nor lend them unlawfuly
to others." He was forbidden to "commit fornication nor matrimony, play
cards or dice or any other unlawful games." Neither could he "haunt ale
house, taverns nor play horses." JAMES CARRUTHERS did covenant to "teach or
cause him to be taught the art and mastery of skin dressing and breeches
making, provide for him sufficient and wholesome drink, washing and lodging
and wearing apparel." This agreement was signed by both Will and Joseph
Gray, father and son, JAMES CARRUTHERS, also WILLIAM and JOSEPH CARRUTHERS.
I am reasonable sure this CARRUTHERS family was mine.
