Subject: James Carruth (Dumbarton, Scotland>Antrim County, Ireland)
Hello to all on the Carruth Fam. E-Mail list,
Of special interest to those descending from James Carruth who died in
Ballymartin Parish, Antrim Co., Ireland in 1728, I have found a possible
connection in the book, "Carruth Family," for him that goes back three
generations. If you do not have this book, I recommend you buy it. The book
covers a good number of the different branches of our family coming from the
area of Scotland that includes Renfrewshire and Dumbartonshire. If you have
the book, look at Z-28, James Carruth. He is shown as born in Dumbarton,
18 June 1679, and baptized the 22nd. This would explain why the records
found earlier had 22 June 1679 for a birth date. Harold B. Carruth notes
there is nothing further found regarding him in the Dumbarton records and it
is probable he removed elsewhere. The birth date above matches what I have
seen elsewhere for James at Genserv (unknown author). There is another James
on the same page as Z-19, born in Dumbarton, 26 May 1678. There are no more
records for him found there either. Both of these James Carruths are shown
as the fourth generation from William, birth and parentage not yet proven but
he may have been born near 1575 and died at Dumbarton near 1635. There is a
message that follows explaining these conclusions. Dumbarton is only about
six miles from Carruth. There is an interesting note here that William's
wife, Janet Neill, was tried as a witch in 1628. William's known son John is
shown here with five children. Also, there is mention that William may have
had sons who went to Ireland during this time period which included when King
James was building up his Plantation in Ulster. Harold B. Carruth states,
"it is highly probable they were among those who appear on the 1631 muster
rolls of the Belfast group and in Donegal." John was shown with the
occupation of a cooper (barrel maker) and was entered as burgess of the Burgh
of Dumbarton, 06 Mar. 1635, "by right of father William Corruth, burgess."
One of John's sons is said to be Robert (deceased prior to 27 Apr. 1687 when
his son Thomas died as an infant at age two). Robert is shown with six
children between two marriages. By his second wife, Janet or Jean Buchanan,
there are three children one of which is James, born 18 June 1679.
Take care and best wishes,
Harvey Carrouth
