Hello,
Below is a letter I sent to Charlotte without the attachments. If anyone has
more information on the Elizabeth Carruth who married John Henry Smith in
Lumpkin Co., Ga. in 1843, please let us know. Thanks

<<<Hello Charlotte,
Attached are Census records from the 1850 Census for Lumpkin County, Ga.
Lander Caruth and family are found on these Census records. This appears to
be the same household as the one I sent you before showing Leroy Caruth as
head of household in 1840. I think we are getting somewhere now and I
believe I know which Carruth branch this group comes from. I've also found
that Leroy and his wife moved down the road to Forsyth County, Ga. by 1850
and are living alone. I can't prove it, but I'd be willing to bet that this
is the Carruth branch that Elizabeth came from that married John H. Smith.
She must have been going by her middle name instead of her first name when
married. If I'm correct, Leroy Caruth found listed in the 1840 Lumpkin Co.,
Census and again in 1850 in Forsyth Co. (have not sent you this one) are the
same and he is the 'Leeroy' I wrote about that is a grandson of Robert
Carruth found in Rutherford Co., N.C. in 1790 (Census). He is listed with
wife 'Sibby' in Forsyth Co. in 1850 and the Carruth family book I mentioned
(From Whence Ye Came) shows he married Sibey Lankford. Lander shown in the
1850 Lumpkin Co. Census appears to be Robert's grandson also and the son of
Alexander Carruth. He is listed in the book as Leander and is shown as
marrying Mary Spires Brown (Census shows him married to Mary) living in
Spartanburg, S.C., before moving to Gainesville, Hall Co., Ga., then later to
Holy Springs, Miss. in 1867. The book shows he had children Albert Brown,
Lafina A., and Adrian Brown Carruth. The Census appears to show his children
living with him in 1850 as possibly Adrian (shown in book as b. 1828) listed
as 22, Margaret, what could be Lafina or Lafinia, and Albert. The 1840
Census for Leroy shows 3 males under 20, 1 male between 20 and 30, 1 male
between 30 and 40, 3 females under 20, and 1 female between 40 and 50. These
numbers do not add up for including Lander and wife Mary (55 and 53 in 1850)
and Leroy and Sibey (55 and 56 in 1850), but do allow room for Elizabeth
(Marion Elizabeth Carouth who married John H. Smith in Lumpkin Co. in 1843)
to have been one of the females listed as under 20. This is my best guess as
to where Elizabeth came from. Not sure if it can be proven, but it looks
like a good possibility. If this is correct then I can give you your Carruth
family ancestry further back. Can't say who Elizabeth's father is yet, but
it appears her great grandfather would be Robert Carruth, listed here as the
grandfather of Leeroy (Leroy) and Leander (Lander). Robert was born in
Lancaster Co., Pa. between 1731 and 1739 when his father Alexander died.
Alexander had immigrated to America in 1729 with brothers Walter and Adam.
Adam is my sixth great grandfather and father of Robert (my 5th great
grandfather) who I mentioned before is also listed on the 1790, Rutherford
Co., N.C. Census. Alexander was married to Jean and she moved her family
along with her brother-in-laws Walter and Adam's families from Pa. to N.C.,
briefly stopping in Virginia, by the late 1740's. There the three Carruth
families bought land and lived in close proximity for a number of years in
the area of then Rowan Co. (now Iredell Co.). Alexander's father was James
Carruth who died in Antrim Co., Ireland in 1727. James appears to of moved
to Ireland from Scotland where older records of the Carruth family are found
in the area along both sides of the Clyde River close to the city of Glasgow.
I hope this information is of help to you and if I can help more, please let
me know.
Best Wishes,
Harvey Carrouth>>>
