Hello Tyler,
From the book, "From Whence Ye Came," I found the following
that you may be
interested in:
Walter Thomas Carruth b. 09 Dec. 1848, d. 29 May 1904, m. 23 Jan 1871 to
Darian Pearson, sister of Ransom Pearson. They had 6 children with the sixth
being Marshall L. Carruth b. 02 March 1884, d. 03 Apr. 1942.
Walter's father was Jesse Lee Carruth b. 05 May 1811 La., d. 22 Mar. 1896,
from a bible record buried Carruth cemetery 15 miles west of Kentwood, La.
Married 1834 to Sarah Elizabeth (Betsie) Allen b. 12 June 1819, d. 04 Oct.
1880, daughter of John Allen and Nancy Day Allen who m. in 1816. They lived
north of Liverpool, La. The 1850 U.S. Census for St. Helena Parish, La. list
Jesse and family last and he is reported to be the census taker. Jesse had
10 children (all listed in the book).
Jesse's father was William Carruth. William was one of the sons of the above
mentioned Robert Carruth and moved to La. along with another brother from the
area of Madison County, Ga. William was born in 1785 probably in Rutherford
County, N.C. shortly before his father and family moved to Wilkes County, Ga.
and a few years later to close by Madison County, Ga. (some of the boys owned
land in Franklin and Oglethorpe County, Ga. as well). William had six
brothers and two sisters who all moved from N.C. to North Georgia along with
their mother and father. You will find some of the property records on page
three of my homepage for William and his brothers. William's brother Adam is
my fourth great grandfather. William died May 1845 Pointe Coupes Parish,
La., m. about 1809 to Susannah Lee b. 29 Dec. 1793, daughter of William Lee
and wife Susannah. Jesse was the oldest of William and Susannah Carruth's 11
children.
William's father was Robert Carruth. Robert was born in Augusta Co.,
Virginia in 1746 where his family settled for a few years before migrating to
N.C. from Penn. It is thought that Robert served in the militia during the
Revolutionary War, but has not been proven. Robert's wife has been reported
to be Elizabeth Anderson, but some evidence suggest this may not be correct.
Robert and family were in Rutherford County, N.C. when the 1790 U.S. Census
was taken, but soon afterwards moved to Ga. Robert married a second time in
1815 to Mary Hitchcock, but died one month later. He was living in Madison
County, Ga. at the time of his death.
Robert's father was Adam Carruth. Adam was one of three brothers and two
sisters who immigrated to America in 1729 from Antrim County, Ireland. They
first settled in Lancaster County, Pa., before moving on to Virginia and N.C.
by the late 1740's. Adam and his brother Walter, along with Jean Carruth
(widow of their brother Alexander who died in Pa.) owned land adjoining each
others in Rowan County, N.C. (present day Iredell Co., N.C.) amounting to
over 1000 acres. Adam sold his land in 1762 and moved to the area just west
of Charlotte, N.C. Adam was married to Elizabeth Beattie and they had seven
children. Adam died in 1782 in Lincoln Co., N.C. (present day Gaston Co.,
N.C.).
Adam's Father was James Carruth. Abstracts of James will are on file in the
Public Records Office, Belfast, N. Ireland. The will list Adam and his
siblings along with his wife. James died in 1727. He is thought to of been
born in Dumbarton, Scotland in 1679. James is thought to of married Margaret
Law. James father is thought to be Robert who died between 1685 and 1687.
If this is correct, we can go back further with Robert's father being John
and John's father being William who died in Dumbarton about 1635.
Two of James' sons stayed on in Antrim Co., Ireland after Adam, and his
brothers Walter and Alexander immigrated to America along with sister Mary
and husband John Huggin (or Huggins, Huggen, Huggens). Also, Adam's sister
Elizabeth immigrated to America along with her husband Thomas McCormick.
Adam and all his immigrating siblings and families were in Lancaster County,
Pa. at the same time. Adam's brothers James and John continued on in Ireland
and their descendants can be found there today.
Best Wishes,
Harvey Carrouth
