Thank you Mr. Carrouth-
Can I ask for the proof or documentation that Adam Carruth, the gun maker of Greenville
was the son of Robert Carruth?
It's really odd but the will of James Carruth who died in 1775 in Mecklenburg County
mentions a son Adam and the court documents indicates John Sloan was the guardian of Adam.
It's strange because in one place it says "my son" and in another place it
says "my only son" , but there were two, Adam and John. John died before 1778
and the estate of James Carruth paid John Green for the coffin, as well as one for
Elizabeth Carruth.
In July 1778, John Sloan was appointed guardian of Adam Carruth, orphan of James Carruth,
security Robert Carruth, and in January 1783, John Sloan was ordered to bring into court
next April, Adam Carruth, an orphan of James Carruth, that the court may proceed there on
as they may think best.
John Sloan was also paid out of the estate of James Carruth for the "trouble and
expense for maintaining and nursing the decease's infant for upwards of ten
years".
So what became of this Adam Carruth who's guardian was John Sloan? This John Sloan
seems to be the "Ironmaster" who lived in Mecklenburg County, then Lincoln
County, NC and moving before 1800 to Spartanburg Co. SC where he died about 1813. His
second wife was Mrs. Mary Davis.
I realize the will of Margaret Carruth 1822 Rutherford County, NC mentioned the children
of her deceased son Adam, but I believe this one (his wife & son) was listed on the
1810 census living with his parents, and in a 1807 deed was "of Buncombe
County". The children of Adam Carruth were still under-age in 1822. Adam Carruth
who moved to Greenville, SC was named in a Dec 1790 deed as "of Lincoln County"
and in a Feb 1804 deed was "of Greenville District, SC", and listed on the 1800
census there.
Adam Carruth of Greenville, SC apparently had a son named Elias Carruth who is reported as
born 1792, but he would have already of age when Margaret Carruth wrote her will in 1822.
In 1821, Adam gave POA to Elias to manage his affairs in Spartanburg County
Lela Grant Carruth never mentioned Adam Carruth, the son of James and grandson of Adam
Carruth, but did connect Adam Carruth, of Greenville SC to Robert Carruth, but never said
how that was determined.
So, I am looking for any information on Adam Carruth of Greenville, SC which gives proof
of his parents and which will eliminate the doubts I have of him being the son of Robert.
