Message Board Post:
In your response to my message where I tried to assist you with information, you ask for
proof or documentation. I might ask you if you can offer proof to the contrary or in
support of anything different concerning Adam Carruth the gun maker being the son of
Robert versus being the son of James, but I won't.
The information I offered was an attempt to help you with information that you asked
about. I have spent much time researching and proving my own line and at the same time
trying to help others. You will have to seek and find the proof concerning what you are
searching for and your theories. I will offer help if I can. You can e-mail me direct by
sending an e-mail to the address shown in the, "board information," section
under, "page tools."
In the post you made (copied below - bottom) you seemed to be most concerned with the
maiden surname of James' wife Margaret. It appeared to me the rest of the information
was secondary to finding this surname and a possible connection to the Sloan family. I
told you that I could not help with this surname. I spent quite a bit of time looking
before making this response.
Concerning the Adam Carruth you mentioned, I have looked at his information from various
sources a good number of times as my line has an Adam Carruth of the same generation.
Your response to my post is all about this Adam Carruth versus the one I responded to
being about James' wife Margaret.
In my initial response to your message I thought I recognized something that you might
have been mixed up on and offered the information I did concerning Adam being the son of
Robert and grandson of Alexander (his immigrating ancestor).
While looking at all this for a while before I made my response, I noticed the
inconsistency in the various reporting of the will for James and made note of it, offering
you further information concerning the children of James, including a son named Adam. I
looked the will up and compared it to the sources I had before making my response to you
and noted that this adds to the confusion in addition to the repeated names in the Carruth
lines.
You ask good questions and I wish you luck in finding the answers. I will help you all I
can, however, I won't debate it on the board. If you find proof that Adam Carrth the
gun maker is the son of James and Margaret, I hope you will report it to all of us.
I will offer one more piece of information for you to use in support of your theories. In
the book, "Carruth Story," written by Myrtle Carruth Cronkrite, mention is made
that Margaret died in 1778, the year her daughter Comfort Green was born. It is also
mentioned that, "John Sloan, a brother-in-law, was appointed guardian of young Adam,
an orphaned son of the deceased James Carruth." Adam is also listed in this book as
one of the children of James and Margaret showing, "ca. 1765-1825." In the
book, "Carruth Family," written by Harold B. Carruth, the same book that
information was offered to you from earlier on this board concerning your initial post,
Adam is shown as a child of James and Margaret, with "ca. 1821," for date of
death. No date or estimate of date of birth was made here. This book also mentions that
James had a son named Adam in his will as well as a son named James and wife named
Margaret. The book mentions that both boys were minors at the time James d!
ied in 1775.
Unless I have "proof" of information concerning further post for this thread, I
will not respond to further post in it, as I do not want to get in to a debate mode here
concerning this subject. I try to offer help when I can, from the information I have or
can look up, to those that post here. It is up to each individual to research and prove
the information they use for their own lineage.
Good luck with your research.

" James Carruth 1744-1775 was the son of Adam Carruth who died 1782. Does anyone
know the maiden name of James Carruth's wife? His widow was named Margaret and married
(2) John Green. James Carruth's oldest son was named Adam Carruth and I believe he was
the gunmaker who lived in Greenville SC. John Sloan Sr. was appointed guardian of Adam
Carruth and was also an executor of the will, but John Green was guardian of three other
Carruth children. Is it possible James Carruth's wife was named Sloan"
