I believe several published genealogies are incorrect in stating Adam Carruth, the gun
maker of Greenville, SC was the son of Robert Carruth and Margaret Knox of Rutherford Co.
TN.
There are two Adam Carruth's listed on the 1800 census for Rutherford County, TN and
one in Greenville Co. SC.
There are deeds which state Robert Carruth (of Rutherford Co. NC) sold land to Adam
Carruth "also of Rutherford Co," in 1802. Adam Carruth then sold the land to
Ephraim Carruth in 1808.
There are deeds which state Adam Carruth of Lincoln Co. NC
now of Greenville District , SC sold land in 1804 which he had purchased in 1790.
Adam Carruth was bequeathed land on Indian Creek in Tyron-Lincoln County, NC according to
the will of his father, James Carruth , dated 1775. James Carruth c1744-1775 was the son
of Adam Carruth Sr. The will said his own name was on the land entry. John Sloan was
appointed guardian of Adam Carruth, orphan of James Carruth, Security Robert Carruth (
Mecklenburg July Cr. 1778) John Sloan was also paid out of the estate of James Carruth for
the nursing and maintaining of his orphan. Because John Sloan was made guardian of Adam
Carruth in 1778 rather than John and Margaret Green, it seems possible that Adam Carruth
was a child of a first marriage of James Carruth. It is also noted this guardianship of
John Sloan was made in July 1778 after the death of two other Carruth children: John and
Elizabeth, and it believed it was about this time the widow of James Carruth (now Margaret
Green) died.
Adam Carruth was closely associated with John Sloan Sr. and John Sloan Jr. which suggests
the mother of Adam Carruth was a Sloan. John Sloan Jr. (1745- 1813) commonly known as the
Ironmaster was married to Jane Carruth, a daughter of Adam Carruth. (*John and Jane would
be Aunt & Uncle to the young Adam Carruth). The Ironmaster John Sloan moved from
Lincoln County, NC to the area of Greenville, SC around 1793.
Adam Carruth is cited as having purchased with Lemuel Alston, 213 acres in Greenville Co.
SC in 1800 which became the site of his musket manufacturing operation, which became known
as the South Carolina Armory, the Carruth Armory, or the Carruth Gun Factory. Subsequent
deeds to this property identify it as the Gun Factory Tract or the Carruth Old Place.
I am interested in any documentation which proves the name of Adam Carruth's parents.
